Here's an interesting story from MotoringFile on LSD not being available on JCW: http://www.motoringfile.com/2008/04/...ini/#more-6629

I have it and have driven a MCS without it and you can feel the difference especially when accelerating while turning left or right onto a street. Hard to explain but you can feel it.

That's because if you use any bit of gas pedal, the inside tire starts spinning

And I guess a car without it would spin the outside tire?

That's a good thing because the outside wheels travel with a bigger radius so it needs to rotate more than the inside one.

Without the LSD you will spin the tire with the least amount of traction, which is almost always the inside tire. With one the wheels get locked together giving both wheel the same torque. As far as wearing out, I've had the stock one in my Nissan Pathfinder for 172,000 miles and never had problem as long as you change the oil in it every 30,000 miles.

Since Dr. Hoffman has passed ...you must do LSD, in his honor.

at 150hp i had torque steer at 245hp 265tq, the quaife is necessary, not to mention bad weather in pa, 4 snow tires and a quaife gets you going, they are gear units guaranteed under racing conditions when i purchased mine in 2002, 140000 miles later its still going

Right, but this is the R56 forum, and Quaife has yet to release an ATB for this application. I agree though the Quaife is an awesome piece of machinery, having one in my R53 was one of the most painful yet worth-it installs yet.

Who is OEM for the '08 MCS LSD?

About an hour ago I ordered a MCS with LSD. I asked the dealer who makes MINI's LSD but he didn't know. He made a call but couldn't find the answer. Does anyone know who manufactures the MINI Cooper S LSD and what type of LSD it is? I am interested to learn more about it.

I did a few forum searches but couldn't find the answer. I apologize if this is a FAQ.

I don't know if I'd notice if I had LSD or not, but I order it in both Ss in the hope I'd have less trouble when it comes to resale. By the looks of the for sale forum, where ever posting for an S gets a question about LSD, I may be right.

As I said I'm not sure I'd notice, in Quentin I sometimes notice going around a particularly "spirited" corner there's a little bump forward. I always assumed that was the LSD doing its work. Its different from the DSC kicking in, which is a little bump backwards at times.

The only thing I have to compare that too are hire cars (we've hired MINIs in Britain) presumably which didn't have LSD, I never noticed much difference in handling. I could compare it to the Coopers, but the difference in power tends to drown out other subtleties.

My question is: Who is Jan and will he do this on a non-turbo model?

This is the OEM LSD. It looks like a cone type LSD.

So a quick calculation means somewhere around 20 - 35% lockup. I think that's in the ballpark for street driven passenger car LSDs.
