Yes, it's at the base of the shifter boot ring...a button with a green led. Not sure if sport-mode comes on all 2nd gen MINIs, but it does an all that come to the US.
No, I haven't read the manual...I assume it will arrive with my car.
You can download an electronic (PDF) version to start reading from MotoringFile: http://www.motoringfile.com/
Just go down about half way and you'll see the link for 07 MC/MCS, should be pretty much the same as the 08.
Here is a photo from my instructions on installing a leather shift boot. This is looking down on the shift boot and left-side cup holder from the driver's side of the car.
It's amazing how nice and informative everyone is in these forums! It's like night and day - the difference between MINI forums and certain other car forums.

I also own a 2006 Mustang GT convertible and I can tell you for certain...this forum is 1000 times more helpful! Every time you ask a question here, you get adult-like, straight forward answers...quite refreshing!
i have always wanted to get one of those "go baby go" shifters (like from gone in 60 seconds) and find a way to connect the button on the shifter to the sport button. Thoughts?

Can be done, if you are determined. The sport button is a momentary switch that connects two contacts on a small circuit board. If you were to wire your new switch to the contacts (but they are tiny) instead of the normal sport button, the electronics would function the same way. This would just replace switches.
The wires below the button assembly are really easy to get to, and if you just need to wire a switch into those, it would be really easy. But I dont know if the circuits on the board are necessary for sport mode to work, or if they just allow the switch to function. My guess would be that they are necessary and you'd need to wire directly to the board...
I hope the sport button was wear tested and made to last a long time because I press it every time I start my car. I don't go anywhere without it on!
I hear ya! but then again I have mine wired to turn itself on, so the button recieves no actual wear from me. A relay timer takes all the wear and tear, so if it fails I'm only out 30 bucks. That would really suck to have that button break or wear out. If you push it every day, that adds up.

Can you tell us how you did this. Probably everyone out there who has bought an '07 or '08 want to know how to keep the sprt button on or make it an automated event
