I usually don't pay much attention to prices between fill-ups, but after that experience I just noticed that within San Francisco itself, premium has hit $4.05 at some stations.

Approx $41 to fill up with premium in West Palm area. Used to pay $60 with older car and fill up more often.

The fellow ahead of me in line at the tax office was complaining about "those damned conservation and liberal groups." I pointed out that one of them (Green Peace? Can't remember) said that if we changed our CAFE requirements to 40 mpg, our annual savings would be equal to what we're importing from the Arab world. It was in my latest audio book, but you'll discover my politics if I post the name of the book (PM if you really want to know).

Then again, he was kvetching that gas was too expensive. He couldn't take vacations anymore--his motorhome got 8 miles to the gallon, and the tank holds 150 gallons. "Do the math on that," he grumped.

Oh, there was more--stuff about those equally damned Californians, and how he hoped all of them would fall into the ocean. Stuff like that. Of course, he had by now endeared himself to me by his astute knowledge of "those damned conservation and liberal groups."

Blame it on the weak dollar.

Let's see, the value of the dollar drops meaning it costs refiners more US dollars to buy the same drum of oil from a foreign source. You expect the price to go down?

daffodildeb - being at the tax office can bring out the inner grump in anyone!

As Pogo once said "We have met the enemy, and he is us!".

Exxon makes almost $1300 a SECOND, and that's just the profit.
And your point is?

ExxonMobil and others are publicly traded companies. These are not nationalized companies like PDVSA or Petrobras who don't have to make a profit or explain the lack of return on their investments. If you own any mutual funds they probably include Big Oil. You want your investments to drop in value because Big Oil is not allowed to make a profit? I'm guessing you want oil for free. Remember, you don't have to drive (or fly, or take a train, or use a bus, or fertilize your grass, or use plastic products.) Feel free to try and drive Big Oil out of business, Congress (comprised of more economically inept individuals then my daughters kindergarten class) continues to give it shot.

Also, remember it is not Big Oil that is driving the economy into the ground. Look at your neighborhood bank for that. I'm sure 5.5% is your introductory rate. Read the fineprint.

In places where they sell gas by the liter. Has the price gone up steadily like in the US?

(Nah, his facial creases were set in a grump pattern, and we were just buying annual car stickers).

Hey, we retailers have used that to our advantage for a zillion years! Only thing is, "price points" won't matter long when it comes to gasoline...

I paid $3.62 per gallon of Shell V-Power a few days ago. Yup, $4 per gallon will soon be a reality in FL, but the excellent mileage of these cars should helps get through it.

And from your congress critters comes this. A plan to increase the tax on oil companies, and thus you, by $18 billion but exempts Hugo Chavez!

http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArti...81621989466&kw

This way you can pay more to the government, blame it on the oil companies and help underwrite Hugo Chavez all at the same time.

Not proportionally. In 'liter' countries, their gas is much more heavily taxed, so the actual cost of the fuel is a smaller portion of the total price to the consumer. That, and the fact that the dollar is falling relative to the Euro means that their (Europe's) cost is not going to rise as fast.

Note that Euro gas is still vastly more expensive ~= 2x, as posted by Baraka

1 Euro = 1.54 U.S. dollars

That makes the price per gallon in Germany = 8.32 $....
