Nope: Cooper and Cooper S are both R56
To add to the confusion, both Cooper and S Clubman are R55, and the upcoming SUV MINI is R60.
The only reason I can think of why the 1st gen's have different R numbers is because they didn't originally plan on the Cooper S until they had already started development of the Cooper. At least that's what I heard.

I think that makes the most sense....on any of their other cars, they received the same number designation no matter what engine the car had....e.g. they had an E30 M3 as well as the E30 standard 3 series cars.

i wonder what happened to the R52, R54, R58, and R59.
and while we're on the subject, what about the R1-R49?
maybe some secret prototypes? maybe one of them is the robot that saves people from accidents. but that would probably be R78. gundam fans got that (RX-78, get it?) well...i thought it was funny.

There is an article about this on MotoringFile:

thanks for that. i found that the R52 was the old convertible. i should have known that. but there are still a lot of missing numbers. i alwawys wondered how companies came up with these designations. especially bmw. why e30? why e45 or e90? yea, the numbers always rise, but not in any particular order, at least, not that i know of. i know this isnt a big deal, it is just something i have always wondered about.
The numbers tend not to make sense when viewed from the outside because they are primarily internal designations. As a design team moves from project to project the numbers change but since not every project is made for public sale the numbers aren't sequential model to model (at least for BMW, MINIs have been a little more consistent).
