Parking lots, with the exception of city/county owned lots, are private property and the police can't write parking violations there other than handicapped spots and fire lanes. At least, that's how it works here in VA.

No door dings yet, but a couple of weeks ago, my wife and I went to a movie, and I parked on the end of an aisle in a parking garage. Next to my space is the driveway of the garage. We came out two hours later, and unbelievably, some a$$hat parked his truck next to me, *blocking* part of the driveway. To minimize his obstruction to traffic, he parked about 12 inches away from my MINI.

There were no dings (and believe me, I thoroughly checked), so he/she must have gotten out on the other side of the truck, because there was no room for a door to open and not hit the other car. I had to pull out of the space so I could open the door for my wife. Unbelievable.

within the first hour of taking my mini off the lot I got my first ding. When my wife and picked up the car we were so hungry we decided to stop and have a bite to eat. parked at the edge of the lot out in nowhere land, and still somebody in a conversion van parked right on top of us. Put a nice crease in the drivers door. I freaked. Now it's nothing a worry about anymore. Here in Chicago everybody parallel parks by running into bumpers to stop. They call it the love tap. I call it prematurely gray.

Try the buddy system.

I park in the same spot at work every day. The people who park next to me park in the same spot every day. It's kind of an insurance policy against door dings. When you know the people that you are parking next to and they know you, they tend to be more careful.

took all of 15 days for stella to get anonymous damage as detailed here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d.php?t=124270

little bothersome...but i was just involved in an accident in which my old car was totalled...so this is really not too bad.

It's the same on the streets of Long Beach. I was washing my old car yesterday (for what turned out to be the last time, as it sold to the people I was washing it for.) and was reminded of all the times I walked out to my car only to see it kissing bumpers with the next car. I would never! UGH. That's part of the reason I chose the Matrix over a MINI last time. I knew there world be no garage to park it in. Aside from the hard water stains, the bumpers are lookin' a little rugged on that car. I don't think I would have handled that as well in a nicer car. Now that I have a garage to park in, I'm getting the MINI.

There is no excuse for dinging someone's door. I would like to surround my car in spare tires, like a tug boat. Maybe I should rig something up...

How about Klingon-style shields as an accessory? Not only will they protect the MINI ... the offending vehicle will be vaporized

Since the person tried to say it was nothing, and clearly was not with the intention of cooperating otherwise, I really didn't care how I got him to give me his info. I wasn't eating the cost of repair. And I would have gladly explained that to the cop.

You're about the sanest person around here, next to me, that is.

Do the legwork, park away from the others. Park next to a curb or on an end. Avoid 2 doors. Try to have an assigned spot.

You know the drill. There WILL come a day, though, when you get a ding. Start working on the configurator...

Oh, and if there is visible damage and you SAW the person commit it, handle it like an accident--license, insurance, etc.

A lot of people get cars every couple of years.
That's how she absolutely does not care about
smashing her lexus into you.

I don't think that door bumper thing will work great.

I've had this happen twice (the only two times where there
was limited parking and I HAD to park there) on two different
cars.

You come out and the whole side of your car is scraped off,
bumper lying on ground. Those bumper things are fine for
monster trucks I don't think so handy for small cars.

I totally agree that prevention is the best way to go.

Um, you don't really mean the bumper, do you? The thingie on front and rear? I'm guessing you mean the product described to put on the sides of the car when you park. Right? Or did your car really get demolished while parked?

I say thats when you put a tow hook on the front and back...that way when they give you a love tap, you leave them with a nice hole in their bumper

Or, it may just bend your frame.

Perhaps having a "gun rack" in the back with a sledge hammer and/or fire axe might be a slight deterrent to other drivers?

I meant the door anti-ding thing for the door.

My ex brother in law puts a full padded car cover
on his car, plus parks in the middle of nowhere.

He's never had it stolen. (probably some type of lock on it)
