The spring that keeps the filter up in the cannister is off-center, so that can tend to push the cannister 'crooked' on screw-in.
It is easy though, to keep it straight for that first turn, also worthwhile to pay attention to thread's 'start' point
and have thread engaged for that first turn.

thanks for sharing your mountain of wealth with us. after reading all these posts/threads the last 3 days i know more now !
i have a silly observation after having read alot of the oil change posts/threads dating back to '07......(one posted he uses redline oil...but NONE ever pondered royal purple.) i wondered why DAN was the ONLY one to use royal purple? cost? ($8 bottle at oreilly's and they have wix filter for like $12 ......might be more expensive but ALOT of car guys in houston WORSHIP royal purple) i have previously used it in 2 mustang cobras, and a focus svt
castrol/mobil 1's popularity/marketing campaigns makes them seem better but as you so eloquently have posted many times to look for the a3/b3 standard...which is better for our engines!
my non-s cabriolet will get the ROYAL treatment this weekend!
