BMW "branded" oil is in fact Castrol Synthetic. If you look closely at your manual you will see (I can't recall exactly where) there is a statement that says something like BMW recommends Castrol Synthetic.

Regarding WHEN to do the first oil change, one of the motorcycle forums carried an interesting suggestion: change the oil after only 25 miles. Whatever benefit would come from a 600 mi. or 1,000 mi. oil change would be even greater if the bad stuff were drained out almost immediately.

My MCS is still about 6 weeks away - maybe by then I will have the nerve to ask the dealer to do a 25 mi. oil and filter change (or maybe I'll jsut do it myself).

It will cost a lot to have the dealer do it. It is pretty easy to do it yourself. There is how to thread here with photos.

Decide in your own mind after reading research, posts, and conversations when you think a oil change is needed, by keeping track of your driving style and miles. I try and do this and try not to worry about what every one suggests.

I think you ought to wait until you have at least 1000miles on the car before you do the first oil change. 25 miles barely loosens things up in the engine. 1000 to 1200 miles has been the generally accepted mileage for a first oil change by BMW experts, and I don't mean BMW AG. By 1000 to 1200 miles any small bits of metal will have been loosened and caught by the oil filter.

SAE 5w30: Is the most recommended grade in today’s new cars. Exceeds all car and light truck manufacturer’s warranty requirements for the protection of gasoline, diesel and turbocharged engines where an API SM, SL, or CF oil is recommended. Exceeds European ACEA A1/B1, ACEA A3/B3/B4/C3 and all requirements of ILSAC GF-3 and GF-4 for API Gasoline Engine Oils and meets Energy Conserving Standards. Meets or exceeds the engine performance requirements for BMW, Bentley, Corvette (GM4718M), Jaguar, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Rolls Royce, Volkswagen, Volvo and other high performance vehicles.

Which one is the requirement that states 15,000 mile interval?

It should say LL-01 or LL-04. 04 being the latest spec.

http://www.valvoline.com/products/Synpower.pdf

On page 2 of the PDF it states that their 5w30 oil meets the LL-01/04 specs.

How can it meet both A1 and A3? I thought they have different requirements.

BTW, you can get rid of any formatting garbage from copied text if you just highlight it and click this button in the upper left:

You'll need to buy 5 do to the oil change but it will only take a little over 4.5 quarts.
