Question About Error Codes

when you get an error code where does the MINI store the error code at? i got the check engine light sunday and i'm just wondering if i disconnect the battery does it erase the memory from where it stores the code? i have an appointment to get it service friday and i have the alta CAI installed on my MINI. i thinking of taking it off before i go so they don't try and say it was the CAI that caused the problem and to not cover it under warranty.

so if i unplug the battery is it going to wipe the memory from where it stores the error codes?

thanks and hope this made sense

Using a diagnostic scan tool is the best approach to clearing the codes. Try to locate an auto parts house like AutoZone or similar, and use their free service for reading and clearing codes. Make sure the tool they use is CAN compatible, as the R56 is CAN diagnostics and older diag tools are not CAN compatible.

If the problem that is causing the code (CAI issue?) has not been fixed, a pending code will most likely still be present even after disconnecting the battery or clearing codes. The dealership will see this code regardless of whether the dash light is on or not.

Is the light on because of the CAI? It's unclear from your OP whether you're getting service due to the check engine light or for something else.

Cheers,
Jeff

I don't believe it is the CIA causing the CEL cause it has been on for about two months. Not sure what cause the CEL.

Thanks for the replies
