R56 HI FI upgrade
HI FI upgrade
Does anyone have specs on the HI FI upgrade. What are the speakers made like, etc. Is the radio upgraded in regards to more power to run the 10 speakers. Do they just add the same or similar speakers x 4 more or are all the speakers a true upgrade. The true cost appears to be $550.00+- not including HD radio or sirius. If I go to say Best Buy and want a 10 speaker upgrade, it would cost more than this. Are the speakers really cheap and say $30.00 a pair. Do you know what I mean.
This is just one more thing to ponder but I am running out of cash and I don't want to make a mistake and regret it.

Someone said there is an amp added for the HIFI upgrade. I recall something about it being in the boot area.
There are six speakers and four tweeters. Replacing the speakers with Boston or Infinity would cost somewhere around $300-400.
It isn't clear to me whether one needs to use 4 ohm or 2 ohm speakers. It has been reported that standard radio uses 4 ohm, but someone said the HIFI takes 2 ohm.

The amp is in the boot. It feeds all ten speakers individually. The speakers in the HiFi system are 2 ohm but the amp can drive 4 ohm speakers fine.
The speakers themselves are not exactly high quality. Replace the fronts with Focal Polyglass 165 V3 E(ebay ~$395 +30 shipping) http://cgi.ebay.com/FOCAL-165V3E-POL...QQcmdZViewItem and you'll be jamming pretty darn good. You can replace the backs and it'll sound better but not by alot. yes, they are expensive but they are worth it.
If you don't get the hifi there is an adapter that hooks up to the back of the radio you can get from www.newministuff.com that'll let you hook up after market amps but it is supposed to be very hard to get to where the adapter hooks up. http://www.newministuff.com/new/shop...uctshow&id=469

3 way component set - replaced lower, mid, and tweets. 6 speakers total in that ebay link.
I took a chance and got the HiFi in my 07 MCS. I don't have any specs on the hardware, but the sound is very good -- nothing overdone, no obvious resonance or distortion. If you like the big, boomy, distorted bass that bothers everyone for blocks around, this is not for you. It is clean, accurate sound -- whatever was in the original recording is in the reproduction, from very low bass to very high treble. Road noise obscuring the music is my only issue, and that's not the fault of the HiFi.

The overall experience is worse for dance/trance music.
Some audio systems reproduce voices, especially male voices, with a rich, full sound where there was none to begin with. It comes from a response and resonance curve that's tailored for that effect. Some radio stations tailor their mics and sound boards to do the same thing. To me, it's distortion. To others, it's beauty.
I prefer a system that is neutral, delivering pretty much what was recorded. If a boomy voice was transmitted or recorded, then so be it.
I haven't had much seat time to listen to the HiFi in my MCS, but my initial reaction is that it's neutral. If the voice was tinny in the recording, it stays that way.
The nice thing about neutral is that you can adjust-in the sound that you prefer in the control panel. If the sound is "colored," it stays that way. You can't easily make it neutral.
If you got the HiFi and you prefer the boomy, warm sound, go to the control panel and boost the high bass and midtone.
