R55 Mini resale value dropping like a stone?
Mini resale value dropping like a stone?
I mean, 3 1/2 years ago I paid around 17k for my 09 Clubman S and now KBB says it's only worth $2600 and change? Carmax said they'd give me $4k?
I know privately selling it might new more but I wasn't expecting that big of a drop. Only have 89.5k miles and the car is in overall great condition. Don't get it.

NADA's site has changed and I can't even figure out how to estimate my car's worth.
Went on Cars.com and used theirs and it listed private party $3825-$6575 and Dealer trade from $1910-$4490 so Carmax isn't far off.
Damn.

If Carmax said they would give you $4k, you could maybe get $8000 private sale.
If you bought the car with the intention of resale value, you made the wrong choice. Early second gen cars just aren't desirable. Add to that, you have a 9 year old car, which is not desirable regardless what make and model.

I just priced an 06 on KBB and would consider the prices similar based upon the additional years. I don't know what 09s were selling for 3 years ago but when I sold my 06 R53 three years ago I was no where near five figures.
Pricing an '12 Clubman S on KBB dealer prices are in the $11k average price range so right wrong or indifferent it appears you paid allot for your 09. What options does it have, how many miles and what shape?
Used KBB but would think the NADA or another type pricing system would have similar 09 to '12 proportional values.

On my 2012 R58 KBB shows a trade of 11,975 on NADA its 14,150
Retail is KBB 15,072 NADA 16,775.
Also my bank only looks at NADA

Didn't think my 09 was out of range compared to others at the time when I bought it.
But, it's a '09 Clubman S with 89.5k miles. 6spd manual.
Interior and exterior in great condition with normal wear for the mileage.
Stock except for Alta foam panel filter, Alta Bov spring and a Milltek catless DP. (none of that is worth much or even considered in the estimates)

Even when I traded my old 09 R56 in (on an FJ) back in 2011 it was bad. I paid 30 grand for the Mini and I think they gave me like 16....it was flawless too and had roughly 50K miles. I do think they struggled to get 20 out of it and it was only 2 years old at the time.
The N14 cars are just not what people want anymore.
I never buy a vehicle expecting to score on the sale later. It is normally several thousand lower when you sign the sales paperwork making the deal final, not when you drive it off the lot. It's best to buy because you really want it and forget the sale when your done with it. I've heard Minis have had a real high resale value years later, but was never considered when I bought mine. Whenever I sell it, I'll worry about it then. In the mean time, I'll enjoy it for many years to come.
Oh, when the so call KBB and all said my past vehicles said was only worth so much, because I took care of it, I've made well over their so call listing.
ie: I have a full size truck 4x4 with a diesel (and present diesel prices) that last month I was offered 31k .. cash, and I only paid 32k when new. Supply and demand plus buyer desire means more than KBB and such.

I sold my 09 Clubman S manual with 86k for 5500. CL is your best bet but it will take time.
Personally, I dont care about whether it is an N14 or N18. They both use the same parts for the most part.
I just bought another 09 clubman S (hot chocolate) manual with 55k for 3500 from the auction...this one is for flipping

1st, 90k miles is no longer a low mile car
2nd the age makes auto loans difficult, over 6 years is one of those humps for lending 10 is another point where lending gets hard, and you see the prices drop further
3rd it's an n14 nobody that knows anything wants those, they are terrible it's not surprising the prices have started to reflect that

For what it’s worth, I got $8k in trade-in value on my ‘12 Clubman S with Auto and Paddle Shifters at 57xxx miles. Folding Mirrors, Heated Stock Vinyl Seats, Harmon Kardon Speaker System. I got out of it before it got any lower....(gulp).....
If I had the time to sell it retail, I would have done better, but no such time available...
