R55 Front Crankshaft Seal Leaking
Front Crankshaft Seal Leaking
This week the hose came off of the intercooler on the passenger side. While I was underneath reinstalling it I noticed oil on the pan. This afternoon I pulled the fender splash shield and looked for the leak and discovered a puddle of oil on the inside of the crank pulley and the seal definitely looks like it is leaking. Everything around the pulley is coated in oil including the serpentine belt.
Of course it is late Saturday and the only place to get the seal is the dealer, if they have it in stock. I checked every parts store in a 25 mile radius and nada.
Anyone replaced theirs diy? The bently manual shows that the 3 bolts come out of the pulley to access the seal, so doesn't look to difficult of a job.
We are planning on participating in a MINI drive from Loveland to Estes Park next Saturday morning and no seal to repair this weekend. Bummer!

I noticed some seepage around mine a year ago when I replaced the serpentine belt. Keeping my eye on it and it has yet to drip down to the oil pan. I agree that it seems to be an easy fix according to the Bentley manual and the seal is available online as well (ECS tuning has it). If/when I replace it I plan to just tap it in carefully and as evenly as possible.
I'd also like to hear from others that have done this repair.

So the story gets better. So I picked up the seal on Monday morning. I remove all the parts to replace the seal. I see the 3 bolts on the crank pulley take an inverted torx socket. I go buy the socket to remove the bolts. The first 2 bolts come out easy peasey. I go to remove the third bolt and the head just rounds off. The socket was seated correctly, it just seems the metal was soft or the bolt was very over torqued. No evidence the bolts had ever been removed before. Not a parts or tool store around me has a bolt extractor small enough to fit the rounded off head. I'm guessing I need one that fits a 7mm head since its rounded off. Ugh, put it all back together until I have time to deal with it again.

Sorry to hear that. A short socket bolt extractor might work best. Check around some hardware / tool store have them.
