Ok, final bit from this experience. I didn't place an order for ECS's because it wound up it wasn't Way's socket so much as either the previous owner or the last dealership put in non-stock plugs. Sucks because the socket I ordered didn't work, but less of an issue because the Brisk ones to go in it wound up being the same type.
Unfortunately as expected the usuual spark plug socket size is too big. I tried a Husky one I read about from Home Depot, and it fit but had a tendency to stick pretty hard to the point I couldn't trust it to come out. I wound up with a 10" long 5/8" magnetic socket off Amazon, that as a bonus actually had a review from an R56 owner. It's a long socket, but on the plus side no extension is needed. It worked great. I'll try to get the link and post it if anyone needs it in the future.
The plugs that were in it were Denso Iridiums. The tips looked pretty black and the ceramic just above the socket part was slightly browned *pics attached*. I put the Brisk in, we'll see if they foul by the next oil change (too cold). But I can tell there is at least a small increase in response, probably just due to the plugs needing to be changed. Now instead of just chirping in first if it's a bit too high on RPM the wheels spin (really need to replace the tires).
Thanks for all the input to everyone who piped up. Sorry if the pics are hard to see, cell phone shots with & without flash.

I saw most seemed to be recommending .022, mine were about there (or maybe a smidge above, hard to tell with the basic gap tool I had). I'll double check them and see about re-gapping if it should be 0.019. I've also gotten better measurement tools so it'll be closer.
If its running fine I'd say leave them be. I don't have a link to the thread at the moment but this person was having problems in 4th gear and higher when wringing it out. Once he gapped down to .19 from closer to stock gapping of .32 his probs went away.
