What is this Vac Pump?

Ok reading around the site, seeing ref's to the VAC Pump on these cars. What is it, what does it do, what is the failure rate, are there preventive things to keep it from failing. I am told if they go the motor may also? What is the sign of it failing?

Vacuum pump is on the turbo cars.

It's a mechanical driven (camshaft) pump that generates vacuum for the power brakes.

Failure rates range from none.. To 50k? Failures often involve a noise (ignored) that causes the cam to lock up, take out the chain, and then the block as the valves smash into the pistons.

Causes are low oil, and bad design.

At the first sign of noise, pull over and if it's coming from the head area near the pump (drivers side of engine (us).) stop driving and have it looked at ASAP.
