DIY Engine Oil Pan Heater

I rigged up an oil pan heater using a worklight, an old loaf-sized metal baking pan, and a 150 watt light bulb. I cut a notch in the end of the loaf pan, which is about 6" wide, 9" long, and 4" high. Then I lined it with aluminum foil, to increase reflectivity, and laid the work light inside. One or two small scrap 1 x 4 boards bring the contraption just under the height of the oil pan, which is about 6" off the ground. I plugged it into a timer, and set it to go on about 2 hours before my morning commute. This morning when I checked the oil via the dipstick it was warm, not hot, and the outside temperatuure was about 17 degrees. Cost, one light bulb, about $2.
Tomorrow it's supposed to be around 5 degrees, and 2 degrees on Saturday. While this may be laughable as an engine heater setup in Minnesota or North Dakota, it's good enough for a Long Island cold snap.

That's quite ingenious. Care to share any pictures?

For a few bucks, this might be worth a try. I'm always paranoid about the cold start thing rearing it's ugly head. Maybe this simple fix will stave off the beast.

Well, right now it's under my MINI. I'm just using a standard work light, the kind with a hinged metal cage around a regular light bulb. The loaf pan can be found in any grocery store. You really don't need to even alter the pan, it just makes the light lay into the pan more easily if you cut a wide notch at one of the ends, so the neck of the work light can lay flat. If you get a non-coated pan you won't need the foil lining, and they also sell disposable foil pans in a loaf shape for a dollar or two.

How is this for an alternative?

It also looks like a pretty complicated install, not an easy DIY.
