gas pumps shut off mid-fill

I've filled up my clubman 2x. Both times at the same gas station. Both times the auto shut-off engaged repeatedly and I ended up just guessing which time the pump really meant that the gas tank was full. The auto shut off was tripped right away, so didn't require the tank to be even 1/2 full before delivery was halted. I tried turning the nozzle, I tried pulling it out a little way (not too far, I was nervous about spilling out).
This is the same station I used to take my Cooper to, and I had none off this trouble then.
Anyone else have this issue? What do you do about it? How do you know when your tank is actually full?

Try a different station.

I've never had an issue filling my Clubman, and I use lots of different stations. +1 on trying another station. If it's still an issue, it's time for a dealer visit, although I don't know what could possibly cause this problem.

Lewis did that at Costco 'till they changed their filler nozzles - I had to turn it upside down. Usually just putting it on the first or second click instead of full blast will help, too.

It's the pumps. Happened twice to us on our last road trip. Reset the nozzle to off...count to 10...and it will work.

My local favorite has exactly the same issue on all pumps. Initially I thought that I should push the nozzle in as far as it would go and pump but the same issue occurred. I then tried twisting it to different angles but same deal. It would fill without incident if I feathered the pump handle but that meant a much slower fuel flow.

Somewhat counter-intuitively to me - it works just fine if I pull the nozzle out about 1/2" from fully inserted. Try differing "insertions" and see if it works on yours...

Well, it might be the pumps, but...

I had the same issue on my '00 Miata every time I filled it, no matter where. I found out that it was a semi-rare issue that cropped up with the filler tube (something about a vent valve not fully opening?). I got it fixed at my dealer under warranty. I only met one other Miata guy who had that problem, but I heard of several others.

Could it happen with MINI? I dunno, but try filling somewhere else next time and see what happens. If it happens again, go somewhere other than that. If it's still happening, then it's time to go visit your dealer for some answers.

The PUMP!
New gas station please.

When filling next time, click your heels together three times and say, "Thank God I didn't buy a Lexus IS."

thanks to all. Since I don't drive 300 miles/day, it'll be awhile 'till my next fill, but will try another station(s). Too bad, though, this is the one station in town that the local car club thinks is reliable.

I will sometimes have to pull the nozzle back about an inch to get good flow.

Different stations have different flow rates set. And, if there are a lot of folks pumping at the same time it will be a bit different than if you're the only one.

If it happens at other stations, then you might have a slight obstruction in the line, or a bad vent line. A kink in the vent line will screw things up too.

And if my experience is any indicator, you'll wanna pump slow, so you have time to answer all the questions from admirers. Last night, I learned from some stranger that the Clubman was in some movie, but I've already forgotten (it wasn't the Italian Job, he corrected me and said it was definitely the Clubman).

I have the same thing, happens on different types of pumps I guess, since it's not consistent. Never had that problem on my Honda though.

Like others pointed out, I slowly apply pressure and never go full force on the handle. I like to go slow anyways to make sure i'm getting my money's worth.

Can you explain what the car club means by reliable? When I think of a reliable gas station, I think it means a gas station with gas. I'm just curious about why a car club stumps for one gas station.

My 1st gen cabrio has done this at nearly every station (dozens of different ones) since new. I suspect that the backflow prevention valve in the filler neck can't flow fuel as fast as the the pumps are delivering it... Probably exacerbated by the different routing of the cabrio filler neck.... I've just learned to live with it, and tricks to insert the nozzle 1/2 way and not put it on "full blast"...

OK, so I should explain that I live in a "small" town. It's the biggest small town in the nation - Tricities Washington. Some members of the car club would never buy gas at Costco, or any number of other stations because of the gas being generic. They like tried and true brands that they feel are consistent and won't have odd fillers in the gas.
But, be aware your source for this info (me) is less than knowledgeable and I'm just repeating what I think I was told. This particular station has a source that is trusted and a moderate price. It's also on my way home from work.
I think next time I fill up, it will be at Costco.
I do remember 15 years ago when I lived in NC, my 200sx would knock if I bought gas at one particular station - so I always assumed their gas had something odd in it.
This might be an interesting thread topic.

I thought I saw that one of the characters iin "Life" was driving a Clubman, but it was a brief shot and I wasn't sure.

I have never experienced the filler premature shutoff problem in large metro areas such as Washington, DC or San Francisco Bay Area where the filler nozzle is equipped with bellows (to reduce emissions). However, on road trips such as from Washington, DC to San Francisco or Washington DC to Toronto I have experienced premature fuel flow shutoff at gas station pumps in rural areas. The only fix is to fill the tank very very slowly.

It happens to me at one particular station near my house. I find if I pull the nozzle back to being half inserted, the gas flows and shuts off properly.

Although, to be honest, I've just started avoiding that station
