2nd attempt, got rack installed - very easy this time

Well, got my rack today from FedEx and went to work getting car prep'ed for the installation. I loosened up the screws per Schatzy's instructions and then applied some vasoline to the ends. The installation went very easy. Got it installed in no time. I do notice that my installation looks different then yours Schatzy. The plastic/rubber coated pieces where you show on yours being a quarter inch away from the side of the roof - well, mine rest up against the side of the roof (touching, but not very hard).

Anyway, I do have a problem with the install on the back though and it is causing the rear club door window to bow out about a 1/16th of an inch or more where it will leak. I swapped ends of the bar and it's still doing it. The rack is slightly pushing down on the rubber seal just enough at the top where the club door window is not making good contact with the rest of the rubber seal.

I'll post some pictures tonight so people can check out, but it was an easy install this time (now just gotta fix the one issue!)

Would really like to see some pictures.

On the rubber parts touching the roof i am not sure why that is i have not seen one yet that does not have a slight gaps, some are smaller than others but they have all had a gap.

A few more

Here are three more. The first picture is an inside shot looking out thru the club door window at an angle. You can see the light sliver where this is the gap between glass and rubber seal. Going to mess around with it more tomorrow to see if I can get the glass gap issue resolved.

I can not tel form you pictures. Do you have on that has little rubber fins like sticking off the bottom of the cross bar. If so this one needs to be set as the front rack. This will make a difference, the bars are slightly different lengths.

I just checked and yes, the one with the plastic/rubber tabs on the bottom is on the front. I've added a couple of shots as well. Thanks for your feedback

From taking another careful look at the pictures you posted i can not see if the door latch is pulling the front top edge of the door in to far.

I have attached some pictures to show how i tested the flushness of the door.

If the front edge of the door is pulled in to far you will see a gap between the door molding and the straight edge used for checking it.

This would then cause the back edge of the door to toe out as is seen in you pictures, leaving a gap along the back vertical edge of the window.

I do not know how to adjust the door latch system as i have not had it apart but there must be some way of adjusting it.

Two things 1. let me know if you understand what my pictures and explanation show and 2. if you can take a picture or like i did with a mall straight edge.

Schatzy, I'll take this offline with you and send you a pic thru email (I think the middle pic in post #481 shows it - might be hard to see though)

Not sure if I'm following you, but I can tell you - if you are facing the clubman door, if the top left hand side of the glass was ~1/16 of an inch lower, then I would not be having this issue. The top left hand side of the glass is slightly higher then the top right had side. The slight bulge in the rubber which is being caused by the rack is causing the top left hand side of the clubman glass to not sit all the way against where it should. I'm uncertain if I could adjust the glass (not sure if I would want to even try).

Moonroof

Has anyone had any success on getting their dealership to fix their moonroof where it will work decently. I understand that there is a technical bulletin out, but just wondered if it worked before I drive three and a half hours for an oil change and an attempted repair on my moonroof that does not work 90% of the time.
Thanks,

buckbs - you might want to post this over there: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick...ld2=-73.49&e=0 on a Sun Roof thread on the 2nd Gen. Stock Problems Issues forum - or start a new thread in here if you want it.

Installed Thule Bike Tray on MINI rack

Here is a pic of the Thule fork mount bike tray I installed today. I just need to add the second one and then do a custom install on the fairing for the front. Actually, mounting the trays has been custom as well since the T-Slots on the MINI rack are bigger then the ones that the Thule expects. I'll post a final pic when everything is completed.

That is strange as the crossbar is the same material and dimensions as the RapidAero bar from Thule.

Bike Mounted IN Garage!!?

TaskMaxter:

Help me out here. Your pic shows your road bike mounted inside the garage. Your garage looks standard height. Are you able to drive in and out with the bike mounted that way?? (I'm waiting on delivery of a Clubman and don't have a clear notion of the size of the thing inside my garage.)

Yep same material and the rack shop confirmed that Thule makes the MINI rack since they matched the keys that came with the MINI rack to some locking cores for the bike trays. When I was in the Rack Shop I checked out the Thule racks and the were thinner then the MINI racks though. The T-Slot on the MINI racks are much wider then the Thule racks (or maybe the version of MINI rack I have is different then others? not sure why things started to deiviate (maybe so MINI could charge more for selling their own special trays, etc)

I threw my bike on there while the MINI was already parked in the garage. If my bike seat was a couple of inches lower then I could easilly drive in and out of the garage with the bike on top.

Taskmaxter,
When was your car made? Actual date? I wonder what the trajectory is for any corrections/issues with the roof rack prep is...ie when they may have started modifying the slots, etc.
Thanks
Peter

Depending on who you get your information from, there are two different stories.

I have a contact inside Mini USA and they tell me that the problem was only on some clubmans and that the problem was fixed before late April builds but then Mini Customer Service will tell you that the problem has not been fixed and they are still working on it.

As for rack part numbers there are new racks supposedly being released for th clubman. The numbers have been released in the UK but not as of yet in the USA. What the changes are i am not sure but i WILL be checking it out when the new parts are available.

All this info is available in previous posts in this thread including par numbers.

A little update from the Great White North

I went to my Mini dealership (Brossard Mini - Canada) and talked to the manager in the parts department. I told him about the 3 part numbers I got. He had never seen the 325 one. He checked in the Mini/BMW system and the part number exists. None available. So he called HQ. Looks like even this number is not the "right" one. Mini is working on a new part that will soon (yeah, I know...) will be available, specific to the Clubman. So:

321 - old part number
846 - only for the coupe, not the Clubman
325 - in the system, but doesn't seem that it will ever be produced (or it'll replace the 846 for the coupe only?)
??? - roof rack specific to the Clubman (TBA)

Of course, he won't sell me any Roof Rack. I could chance it and order an 846 rack from the USA, but if it doesn't fit (where do I find my Clubman production date?), it'll be a hassle to return. And no other roof rack maker have a fit kit for the Clubman.

I'm torn...

The one I received was the 846 (for the R56). Once I loosened the screws per Schatzys instructions and lubed the end points with Vasaline, it is easy to get on or off. Again, I do have a very slight gap at the rear of the club door window but I'm going to live with it for now and hope I can get a retro kit when the new parts come out.

taxmaxter,

you sent me a PM and i responded did you get it. I would like to see the pictures you were going to send.

I think the gap problem can be resolved it is just a mater of how.
