We were in the car for a few hours today and it was close to 90 degrees outside. It wasn't bad with the stock tint and the screens pulled, but I'm going to have them put a tad darker on the sunroofs, but not limo, or even dark. I think adding medium to it will help a great deal. I will tell you driving that around today with no tint on any of the windows at all, I felt like I was in a fishbowl! LOL!!

The girl I use in So Cal did our Suburban, my crew cab GMC truck, and our convertible Mustang GT. She comes to my work and does it there. She does beautiful work. I wouldn't go anywhere else.

I'm going darker on mine... but

WV law is 35%. I plan to go 20%. Not that much of a difference,
but still illegal. I can agree with some of what you say Brigehorse,
but I try to put myself in the officers position.

It's dark out.. you pull over a car in the wee hours of the morning.

As you approach the car, you can't see squat from outside. If I
were the cop, I'd most likely roll into felony stop mode. One in a
thousand chance the person behind the tint is a "bad" guy with
a 9mm , but my goal every day would be to go home the next
morning to my family. If I tick off the 999 "good" guys who just
like dark tint, I could live with that.

In my case, I was just talking about tint yesterday with my wife.
Told her if I'm pulled over and my tints not legal... I'm first rolling
down my windows, and if I'm carrying , advising the officer that "yes" ,
there's a gun in the car. (Legal CCW). No sense making his day any harder.

Nor mine.

I am considering a sunroof tint or a vinyl decal. Any thoughts on this from Aesthetic Creations?

that's the vinyl decal i was talking about in an earlier post somewhere in this thread a few posts or so back. i think it looks pretty good. although, i would imagine for a lot less you could buy the vinyl and cut it yourself and apply it. i mean that's all they did, you still have to apply the product yourself or pay someone to do it.

there's actually a place right across from sunshield in sherman oaks on van nuys called sticker city (they have a website), and i think they will do this also and they may (if you want) have a wider array of colors. i've been thinking of contacting them to door my door pull tubes as the silver is rubbing off in spots.

i understand the reasoning behind the tint laws. in california you may have any darkness on your windows except the front 2 (and windshield can have a 4" brow). on your front 2 you can not have ANY aftermarket tint. that being said, i'm not a bad guy . in a lot of searches you'll see online that your windows can be tinted to allow at least 70% of light trasnmission but, even the installer told me that's not true- you cannot tint them at all. i got my fronts done at 35% and the back 3 at 15%. if i see a policeman i'll roll down the windows. and if you ever get pulled over, roll them down and put your hands on the steering wheel in plain sight.

i think generally, unless you're being an *** they let you slide. of course they can pull you over on a whim. i see a lot of others driving around with tint way darker than i have on their front 2.

anyhow to the OP, enjoy the tint . i'm not sure what type of sunroof roll shades the new MINI's have but, i went for an easter cruise yesterday up through the canyons in tujunga. i had all my windows and roof open but, i kept my shade pulled and was actually surprised how effective it was and blocking out rays and heat, while allowing me to hear and feel the open air. .

You guys have conviced me to tint mine. I think I am going to get the static ones first and try it out. If I am happy with it, I may do the permanent ones later. Went out for a drive today and felt like my face was cooking in the South Florida sun and it is not even summer yet. Thankfully I had a baseball cap and that helped out. I just don't want to keep wearing one everytime I drive my Mini.

You guys also convinced me to get my sunroof tinted. I got the LIMO black (4%) for my sunroof and side/rear windows. I also got a "eyebrow" tint for my windshield. I must admit, it actually makes a huge difference inside. It's not at bright and hot during the sunny days and I love the way it looks! . I'll post some pics later..

I went with the legal 35% on the sides and 5% Limo tint on top. I was told that the glass will be fine, and that the shattering occurs with double pane due to heat build up between the layers. Time will tell. Here are some photos.

yeah, was worried about the sunroof as well. because on hot days my sunroof sometimes chooses not to open... so that gets me thinking.

anyone know somewhere closer (that's reliable) that's near the 714 area code? (SOCAL)... live here in fullerton, and i need to redo my rear passenger side tint, as well as new ones in the front, and sunroof tint. so ( that'll be 5 windows)

(i have the rear drivers side as well as the trunk windows tinted).

so if anyone knows anywhere closer than van nuys let me know

Just a word of advise. For all who have tint on your windows do yourself and any law officer that pulls you over and lower the windows on both the drivers and passenger side. And if at night turn on the interior light immediately. Almost every officer will recognize the gesture and it may save save you a ticket.

I had all my windows 'cept for the front tinted by "Sal". He owns Perfect Window Tint, Inc in Harbor. Does a great job, has been doing it for 20years. Plus, great customer rapport as well! I had 40% Hüper Optic Ceramic Tint on the 5 windows. The 20% tint on the sunroof is not ceramic though. Huuuuge difference on the heat problem! Huge as in you can barely feel the heat coming through! And, it has a lifetime warranty too. Needless to say, I'm very happy with the result.

And I asked him about the heat build up on the sunroof and he told me it depends on the tint being used or the glass. I dunno. He said it never happened to him [or atleast none of his customers came back with a blown up sunroof, lol.]

Anyway, here's his info:

"Salvador"

714.549.2200

3071 S. Harbor Blvd., Santa Ana, CA 92704

I just had my Clubman tinted including the moonroof. I did moonroof at 35% and am regretting it. I now realize I want it darker...much darker. Either 18% or Limo. Originally I wanted my cabin to be lighter and airy, which it still is, but 35% doesn't make enough of a difference in terms of keeping out heat, so I'm a little bummed. So if you're getting your roof tinted, I would go with 18% or darker.

I wanted to get the sunroof tinted but when I called the tint shop they said they wouldn't do it as they get too hot and they may shatter if it rains or a bird poops on it....
anyone have any such experience?

The girl that did mine had heard that too so she checked with the tint manufacturer and they explained to her that its the reflective tint that cannot be put on the sunroof or any other factory tinted windows. The tint reflects back to the original tint and traps the heat and could do glass damage. They told her to not use reflective and it would be fine....so we did ours and its great. We took several trips to Phoenix and Havasu this summer (110 to 120 degrees out) and didnt feel a thing inside. I'm impressed!!

If you think your tint tastes run afoul of law enforcement in your state, you can probably "get a note from your doctor" if you have lightish skin (freckles.) You'd have to jump through a few hoops, get the doctor's note on file with the state and keep a copy in the car for the next cop who'll stop you.

At least the sun roof can be done pretty much however you want.

[I live in NH where any tint on front or front sides is illegal, so I've been trying to work an angle...and I have a freckly English/Scots/German skin.]

Tinted for South Florida Heat.....

Cabin temps can reach 140 degrees. Tinting is very common here. Mini screwed-up by not using an opaque retractable sunblock, that perforated screen is useless.

Notice how much darker the sunroofs are when compared to the tinted windows. The windows are Florida-legal although I'm not sure of the percentage.

Nice, dark cabin!

Regards,
Terry

Before delivery in mid-June, I had my windows tinted the legal 35%, although I was told that the Clubman was classified as a station wagon so the rear side windows could be tinted as dark as I like.

As for the sunroof, I went with the 5%. When I first took a Clubman for a test ride, the first thing that hit me was the sun in my eyes and I knew I would not be able to tolerate it. I'd definitely go for tinting!!

After realizing 35% was way too light for the sunroofs, I went back to the shop and had them remove the 35% and replace with 5%. They only charged me materials which is nice considering it was my mistake. I'm much happier now

If any of you Bay Area people need to know a great place for tinting...Auto Image in Belmont is FANTASTIC! Jeff and Mike do a great job and are nice guys to boot!
