Have they hinted at a design for the clubman roof rack? Do you think they will just be using the clamp on rack from the r56?

 

So someone did start a thread on this after all!

I've been researching this and there's a thread on MINI2 about it. As of now, I have not found anyone in the states who has posted about the rack for their Clubman, though they do exist. According to my MA they are Thule racks and they basically work the way the R56 racks work - as in the installation process. Having spent an inordinate amount of time reading about this on the 2nd Generation, Coupe Talk forum, I've found an excellent thread in which oldopelguy has gone into great detail: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ight=roof+rack with the really good stuff beginning on page 2. That said, I'd still love to hear from people who have a Clubman with the roof rack.

On MINI2 there are several people who will be taking delivery of their racks and/or Clubman very soon, so they should shed some first hand light on the realities of the rack in its Clubman incarnation. I've heard similar information that the roof rack is much like the one for the r56 with a few slight changes.

 

We have one on our Demo here at the dealership. It's nice1 Clamps on & is a MINI rack. I'm taking it to a lunch today that some of the club members are going to!

FYI, a road bike will fit inside the Clubman with the rear seats folded down, and the bike's front whel removed.

 

I had originally ordered mine with a roof rack until I canceled after having seen the rack installed at the Clubman launch party. I would have kept it if there was no modification to the vehicle but there is. They have to cut out a little of the railing and maybe a little more than that. I just don't remember right now. I would like to see longitudinal racks installed at the factory and when you want to use the rack, you can add the cross bars and then, the accessory. My images from the launch party really don't show the rack installation close enough to see the alteration.

Any pictures, I have a 52cm road bike and would like to know the answer for this for a long time. That is also one reason that I go with a Clubman instead of Cooper S

 

Right, ftttubrgcm, so it does sound as though it's the same installation configuration as the one for the R56 MC and MCS. If and when I do get any feedback from anyone who has it on their Clubman, I"ll be sure to post a link.

I couldn't agree with you more about the roof rails.

 

It is the exact same installation as the R56. We just put one on our Clubman over the weekend. I'll take some pictures and post them. Very easy to install - less than 30 minutes.

The only cutting is on the INSIDE of the rail gutter - not on the outside.

Actually, if you look at the roof of the R56 models, they all have the little area on the gutter where it shows to cut.

No bike-in-the-back photos yet, as my Clubman hasn't been delivered yet. But I tried it out at the dealer, and it fits. There's 56" from the back of the front seat to the inside of the back doors. My 54cm frame fit with a couple of inches to spare. Of course, depending upon where you adjust the front seat you may gain or lose a couple of inches.

 

Donna, thank you! After everything I'd been reading it sounded as though (for me) it would not be something I'd even think of trying...but my husband the carpenter is quite handy.

So in other words that little plastic rim piece is cut on the inside? You see I don't have the 2nd Gen. MC...

Would you find it easy to remove when you're not using it? (I know these questions are a bit on the "ad nauseum" side)

 

You're very welcome! Your hubby should have no problem at all. The instructions that come with the roof rack are pretty clear. Very easy to take back off.

The inside rim piece has a very subtle perforation - you have to look real close to see it - that's where you do the cut. It's not real obvious - on purpose I would guess.

Well all this is a breath of fresh air! Some of the descriptions, on that that main thread on the R56 roof rack, have made the whole thing seem incredibly harrowing.

Yep did a DIY jobby, bit fiddly, not sure I'll be taking them on and off a lot to be honest, some clamps were easy others to a while? Don't know why maybe its just me? Box was one I had previously and used on a Jeep, looks OK.

I'm coming very late to this forum - but I just bought a 2009 clubman, then a rack from the owner of a 2011 clubman that came with the rack and had it removed. Mini of Peabody says there is no difference but I can't make it fit, especially the back one. I see the pics on the one installed above and the clamps appear to go behind the black rubber mounding. Is that so? Is it necessary to cut the rubber moulding? Not sure I want to do that!

Yes, there is a small portion of the drip rail molding that needs to be cut away. When you get a new rack in the box, it comes with a good set of instructions, as well as some little plugs to fill the holes if you remove the rack. Check with your dealer, they can probably set you up with a kit, for a price!

Here is a link to a thread with MUCH better set of instructions than what comes with the Racks. Check the first post for the link. I wrote these my self as the ones in the box were crap. Dealers like MINI of Peabody, Herb Chambers MINI of Boston, Inskip RI, and New Country in Hartford were using these instructions to get the job done.
