R52 What are the reasons to buy a convertible?
If it is 60 and you have your windows down and a convertible rolls by with the top up and and the windows closed and you ask "Why?" then a convertible might be for you.
Also, if you want to give a thumbs up to a convertible driver with the top down when it is below 60 the convertible might be for you.

Both from me. As I have no convertible, and do want one, seeing people driving around with their tops up on a sunny day offends me; what's wrong with that person, I think? Why bother having a convert. if you don't enjoy it as intended?
Sally is my 5th cabrio, out of 8 cars I have owned. I can't understand why you would buy a car without the ability to lower the top. When I met my bride 2 years ago, I was cabrioless. With her encouragement, we went to the dealer, and took the plunge. Our drive home was her first time ever in a cabrio. It rained. We left the top down. She loved it. She giggled. I remembered for the umpteenth time that day why I married her. No hardtop could engender that type of emotion.
ANd I DO have those dark thoughts about top-up motors....
BUT....I give them benefit of the doubt.
Once in a while, my top is up - when the cats are in the back, or when I have a passenger that I care greatly for who is truly uncomfortable with top down (usually cause of temp or rain.)
While Basil was on order, I took great offense when seeing owners of ragtops driving about on a nice day with the top up. I wanted to pull them out of their cars and force them to drive a tin top. Now that I can motor with top down, I am much more patient with them as I motor by with the wind in what's left of my hair. I figure that it is their loss!

First I think there are few cars available today in a convertible that actually look better than their non-convertible model. The MINI is arguably the exception to that rule (no dis'ing intended to fellow non-cabrio MINI owners).
Now why have a cabrio?
How about unlimited head room. I went to Home Depot and bought 10 four foot light fixtures and some other crap. Top down, light boxes standing up in the back and home we went.
Or how about the fact that every kid in the neighborhood will run over to see your MINI, but show up with a MINI convertible and the adults come over too.
Yup, its heavier and more flexible, but jeeze who cares?

If ever there was a question with the simple reply "if you have to ask. . ." You're either a convertible person or you're not. You get it or you don't. I'm an engineer and as logical and analytical person as there is alive. But some things just don't require explanation, and why I love driving my convertible is one of them.

I was on the road today with my top down as usual. I passed at least three other convertibles that had their top up (Chevy corvette, pontiac solice, pt cruiser & a miata) The weather was 76 degrees here in Central Florida (polk county). I just wanted to SCREAM "PUT YOUR TOP DOWN!!!!" and join the FUN! I guess what was said earlier about other convertibles not being as fun as the Mini might be the problem. In defense of the Chevy Corvette Convertible (not the one seen today), My brother owns one and puts the top down 95% of the time when he drives it.
I live in Connecticut, and have my top down 95% of the time, regardless of temp! I just spent a week in Long Beach CA, where it was 70's and 80's and sunny, and only about 5% of the verts had their tops down...
I don't get it!!! Is it a case of "yawn, another perfet weather day here in sunny SoCal..."?
OK, I know there are always legit reasons - maybe you are transporting your sick cat to the vet...but such a low percentage of tops down? Y'all coulda saved lotso money on your cars, folks!!
I do, however, have to take exception to MINIMayBee - I have an occasional twinge of truly missing my beautiful CR/W tintop - comparing the 2 cars with tops UP - the hard top is just a GREAT looking car - not so with my boring black ragtop up.
But, thankfully, it is amost never in that state, so I'm OK with that!!
(Brrrrr - thank heavens for heated seats!)

Of course, that might also apply to being a nudist...
