It's not really that I can't afford it, but I'm already up at the max my parents will allow me to go. And since they split the cost of everything with me (well, I pay a bit more than half) I can't really complain. As an 18 year old kid in high school, a regular Cooper Convertible is more than good enough for me. So I guess I'll take your advice and avoid testing out the S. Maybe next time around...a few years down the road.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but have you called your insurance company to find out how much it will be to insure a new '05 MCC to be driven by an unmarried male, under 25 years of age?

I hope you or your parents are well acquinted with the high premium costs when there is a teenage driver in the household.

The MINI Convertible is the most expensive model to insure in the lineup. Find out how much your policy will be because you may end up ordering a hardtop Cooper model or a different car altogether.

Unfortunately, the most dangerous drivers in the eyes of insurance companies are unmarried males under the age of 25. Sounds unfair but it is a fact of life with car insurance.

Since no one has brought this up, I think this is a good time for you to find out if you are going to be able to afford the insurance.

And yep, my parents are pretty well-aquainted with the high costs of teenage car ownership. This is my second brand new car. I got my first new car right when I turned 16, so I know what to expect.

I have owned 3 Mustangs. A 1986 GT, 1989 LX 5.0 and a 2000 GT Conv. I love the new Mustang design, but I don't feel that Ford's quality is where it needs to be for me to buy one. My 2000 was constantly in and out of the shop for clutch problems. (I would be sitting at a stoplight and the clutch would emit a high pitched screeching until I pumped the pedal. They kept throwing parts at it, but never found the problem before I unloaded it).

Our other car is a VW Jetta GLI. Prior to that, we had two Beetles. A 1999 turbo and a 2002 turbo. The 1999 was a lot of headaches. It seems that all of the problems were worked out by the time we got our 02. We put almost 30,000 on it before my son was born and my wife wanted a four door. I guess we have been lucky with our VW's. We even considered a Cabrio Beetle. My problem is that I just can't see myself driving it. With the prospect of a Pepper White convertible MINI, that will be our next vehicle.

 

I sold my 2003 MCS and now have a 2005 Cool Blue MCC...no regrets

I'm sorry, but a Mustang Convertible is VERY much a "real" convertible too... them's fighting words! (unless you were making fun of the VW).

I don't disagree - that Vette is very nice. I wasn't trashing it in any way, just sticking up for the Mustang. :smile:

 

He said he was no longer considering the Mustang (because its RWD and he lives in New England where they have snow...) so I was just bashing on the VW!

 

Spoiled brat! Congrats on your new car which looks like it will be a Mini. Everyone else has commented on the cons of the mustang and beetle in previous posts. As for me, we actually went to test drive the Mini "just for fun." I have my eyes set on a M3 Cabrio (still do) but after test driving a MCS and seeing the MCSC we decided that the M3 will have to wait. The Mini isn't the fastest thing in the world but they are pretty quick (MCS that is) and they handle the twisties extremely well. The MCSC doesn't handle as well as a MCS but it still drives great!
