EP Mode

I have a gen 1, R52, convertible S. Was driving around this morning, and all of a sudden shifting stopped working normally. Tried to manually shift (I have sport mode and manual shift paddles), but nothing. Noticed the instrument control panel no longer said "D", but was blank. Or, it went to EP. According to search, that is Emergency Program, and is kind of a limp mode. Got back to the house without problems, but shifting was basically non-existent.

Some backstory: At the beginning of the week, the tachometer had flickered to zero multiple times, with no reading, but then eventually worked. I figured I would head down to the junkyard and grab another tach out of there, and move on with my day. Now, with this new thing going on, I noticed that the speedo was losing power, and flickering on and off.

Are these related?

More backstory: I am having issues with my valve body and was going to buy a new one to replace toward the end of October. I am having a lot of the typical issues the Gen 1 transmission had The Aisin Transmission as this is an S model). The solenoids don't function properly, and shifting is problematic when the transmission gets warmed up. swapping the valve body would very likely fix this issue. Yes, there is ample fluid, and it is brand new.

I have four codes: P0700, P1611, P1613, & P1607. These all go back to the transmission in some way or another. At least one says the valve body may be the culprit. However, another says the instrument cluster issues might be the cause. To me, though, problems with the instrument cluster sound more like effect, not cause. That almost feels like pushing on a string. But that is what the code states, to check the instrument cluster, and I had issues there. Another issue may be the speed sensors on the transmission, which it looks like I have an input & output sensor, and they cost all of $20.00 for the pair.

While I am about to put a lot of money into this in order to get it up to 100%, I need to get the MINI back on the road quickly.

Any thoughts?

Check on the connections first, then start replacing sensors.
