R52 Wind whistles at front of top
Wind whistles at front of top
Hello fellow Cabrio's!
2005 MCS, lots of miles. Convertible top works well, but there has been a gradually increasing whistle developing at speed at the front of the top against the windshield frame. I think the gap between the two as seen from the outside is bigger than it used to be, by maybe 1/8"? Is it common for mechanism wear to cause the top to not press as far forward? Is this adjustable?
I thought about sticking a strip of thin, low density foam to the weatherstrip, but that feels cheesy. Or maybe the weatherstrip is just squashed down, certainly possible. It looks and feels supple, and as I said I have the impression the top is not quite all the way forward.
These are not quiet cars as we all know. But this whistling is crossing the line! Gotta do something...
Thanks! Jeremy

Thanks Brick. I don't see anything wrong there, but I have had the windshield replaced more than once, this thing is a rock magnet!
Check out this link for the service manual:

It's the body gap diagram. Am I mistaken, or do they neglect to include a spec for the gap between the soft top and the windshield frame??? It's shown in bold line like they intended to put a spec, but no spec. The same diagram is in my Bentley's manual. WHAT THE HECK??? Does anybody know what this gap is supposed to be? Would any of you 1st gen Cabrio folks mind taking a look at yours for me?
Additional note: It even says on the following page, about top adjustment, to check the gap dimensions when adjusting the convertible "main bearings". AARGH

A few more observations.
First, my gap at the front of the top between the top and the windshield frame trim is ~1/8"+ on the left, 1/4" in the middle, and 3/16" on the right. Not perfect, but pretty even. Looks to me like if it were forward and down about 1/16" in both directions it would seal and be a better fit. I've read a bunch of threads about evening it out side to side via the motor and cables in the roof center, but is mine out enough to warrant that?
Second, when I run the top up and the frame is coming down to insert the alignment pins into the sockets in the windshield frame, the pins hit the socket "funnels" near the back of the funnels, maybe 1/2" back of the holes, then "funnel" into the holes. That's why the funnels are there, but I wonder if this is too far back and maybe related? See the following link:
https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/r...ration/EJmYNg0
Notice that it says "Rotary Striker (3) and journal (1) [this is what I am calling the alignment pin] must close correctly and vitually silently." Well, my pins bang down pretty hard on the back of that funnel/guide. It then says, "If necessary, adjust the convertible top." It takes you to a section on adjusting several things, but I think the main bearings are the only one that would fix this.
Has anybody adjusted the convertible main bearings? Do any of you have tops that close like mine, or where the pins hit the holes closer to center?
Thanks, Jeremy

My pins also hit a little back from the hole with a thud and then slide in. I think the "rotary striker" is the the locking jaw/ hook (p/n 54347174763) that then slides around (silently) from underneath to lock the roof in place as the next step.
What i did is unhook the motor for the sunroof. Pushed the one side a hair more forward and making sure the top was parallel with the seal. Then put the sunroof motor back in and boom, its was fixed.
