Trunk open light

Is it a common problem to have the trunk/bonnet open light come on (and go off) randomly when driving? Is there a solution or a suggestion of where to start?

Pushing the trunk closed works for a little while but the problem comes back after a few miles.

I thought it was not too bad when it happened during the day. The inside light comes on but it is no big deal in daylight. Last night it came on several time is a 10 mile drive. Turning off the interior light only works until the next time the trunk open is triggered again.

It's a known problem with the switch that the tailgate presses on when closed. MINI updated the switch with a longer plunger. Order part 61319119052 from the dealer or Google the number for online vendors.

Put 2 or 3 layers of electrical tape where the plunger contacts the tail gate.

When it started happening to me, initially I would stick layers of stuff at the contact point but it would only work temporarily. I had to keep making it thicker and eventually tried a coin or two but the fix was never permanent. I learned (from this forum) that MINI had a service bulletin about it and that they had updated the switch. The new switch has a plunger that is substantially longer, by at least by a half inch.

mine had a cracked switch housing. all I did is pop the switch out press everything back together and pop it back in. took a total of 5 minutes. don't even think I used any tools. I always like to check the free stuff first. pull the switch out and take a look at it

Happened to me a few years back. I bough some stick on rubber bumpers (the type you would find under an old tv or laptop) at an electronic parts store. Its about 1/4 inch thick and stuck it onto the boot plastic section where the plunger makes contact. Works perfectly.
