R52 power steering grumbles on low speed maneuvers.

Hi,

So this has never really caused me a problem but I'd like to know what is going on. When I am parking or moving the car out of the garage, with the steering at a larger angle than driving, the car makes a weird sort of noise. It doesn't happen while I turn the wheel while stationary so I don't think it's a pump. If I had to guess I'd say it was a CV joint of some sort.

The noise it makes as you go forward or back is a sort of oily squeaky whirrrrrr ing. There is no clicking, and it don't have to be on full lock, anything around 50% of lock I'd say.

could be wheel bearing or CV. Check your strut top bushings too.

Thanks for the reply.

Wheel bearing I would expect to be a speed dependent roar at any angle, and a CV joint i would expect a clicking, rather than a rubbery groaning, but I could be wrong about the construction.

Strut tops I will check.

Others have mentioned the LSD (if fitted) can grumble, but I doubt I have it.
