Another exhaust question or two

Some basic questions toward getting better exhuast note. What is meant by "cat-back"? Is that from the converter rearward or rearward including the Converter?

Can one simply replace the muffler or is it necessary to replace the pipe forward of the muffler as well? Or, when buying these systems, does a new cconverter come with the system?

Finally, can someone provide me with the name of a vendor who sells Milltek exhausts. Thanks very much.

The stock exhaust header has a catalytic converter on it. Then after the converter, there is the break in the pipe, where it bolts up to the rest of the exhaust. From that bolting point backwards to the rear of the car is considered the "cat-back" exhaust. This includes a long pipe that runs down the middle of the car, (perhaps with a resonator can), then a split pipe that goes to 2 muffler cans, then they meet back at the tail pipes. (This, in the case of the Milltek). There are many other variations on what happens after the main pipe. Some are single-sided, like the Alta...

So a cat-back exhaust does not include the header/cat combo. That is indeed a separate purchase.

Webb Motorsports sells Milltek exhausts. Here is the link

GRichard, I have the Milltek on my Mini (cool blue MCSC). However, an expensive proposition, the sound is subdue and easy on the hearing specially on a cabrio.

Just last weekend I removed the resonator that comes with the milltek and replaced it with the stock pipe (the middle section in jonnieoh pic above). This was due to the installation of a USS bar. I absolutely love the sound! It growls a bit more and there's still no drone at highway speeds.

In hindsight, I should have taken it to a local muffler shop to have the stock mufflers replaced. That would have saved me lots of $$$ for other mods!!!

Sounds like others have gone the stock route swap (your other thread) and that is the first place I would look into.

Good luck!

I love the Milltek, especially when combined with a cold-air intake. The sounds are good for like 100 vHP. (Virtual horsepower).

MiniTuner also has the Milltek for sale:

So, I should be good for about 120vHP!! I have the Minimadness CAI and the Milltek less resonator. That's where I got my milltek from... but I don't remember paying $999 for the cabrio one?! Selective memory? Buyer's remorse? Or, just don't want to look like I was dupped? Perhaps! I have to find my invoice. It just seems too much money for a piece of piping just to get a better sound???

Hey, been there, done that...no argument from me!
