Top's busted again...

So my MCC's top is busted again.
First time, i went to open the sunroof from a distance and only one half slid back - the other side stayed still until the motor stalled.
brought it in, they "fixed" it by "replacing the cables".

well, now, when i went to open the top, the sunroof stopped halfway through... thought it was just the signal getting interrupted.. anyway, just after the clamps opened, the top froze! couldn't open or close it anymore, certainly couldn't drive like that!!

i restarted the car and was able to close the top. Won't open it again until they've dealt with it...

anyone else have these problems yet?

As I am waiting for my car (purchase) I HATED reading this post. Of course my reply is of no help to you - but I started to read the "issues" forum and had to stop as I saw many reoccuring problems with this car. Am I buying a very unreliable car ?

Unreliable? No. Quirky? Yes, but...all major issues will be covered by your warranty.

06 or newer Cabrios will be pretty trouble free. A few early 05's had some roof issues but the warranty covered that. Mechanically, 05's and newer are VERY reliable. Remember, there is NO other car on the road that has the fun factor of a MINI. It is the ONLY car you will WANT to drive after you own one. It will spoil you.

I may have some problems, but i wouldn't trade the car for one twice as expensive... All of my problems are and have been covered under warranty, no questions asked. My car is a sept-04 delivery, making it one of the oldest new convertibles here. When it has ~100k miles, around 2010-11, i'm going to trade it right in for the newer mini convertible.
That being said, and i don't want to scold... you should always check out trouble-issues on a car before you commit to buying one. I did, i hemmed and hawed about the mini convertible for 6 mos before mine finally arrived! Don't worry - you're gonna love it!

Early models

Unfortunately you find that with most first year or first generation cars. It's the complaints registered by drivers and further testing that help refine and fix unforseen issues. It takes ALOT of thought into making a new product and some aspects of design (and their flaws) are unforseeable.

My 05 Cabrio is on her 3rd new roof, 3rd set of rear windows, & 1 sunroof cables repair. She was one of the first Cabrios shipped to the U.S.(Sept 04) All I know is that later made Cabrios don't seem to have as many roof issues. Sorry for the bad news but it's the nature of the beast. Her warranty will be up in a year so I think a Clubman is in the future. But I still LOVE my Cabrio.

Well, my 2005 w/ 21K miles finally had the same problem. One side would go back but one wouldn't. Took it to the dealer and they got me in the next morning. Fixed in 1.5 hours and all under warranty. They even offered to fix it the same day I told them about it.

I'm really beginning to wonder if an extended warranty would be a good idea when the factory one (4/50K) runs out.

Yeah me too... I am open and shut at least once every day in my '05 MCC w/no problems.(Am I jinxing myself by admitting this ...hope not)

I have always been very skeptical about "fully automatic" ANYTHING. To be fully automatic means there is a machine with moving parts and a power requirement in the works and that just adds up to more stuff that eventually WILL break down.

If I had the chance to tell the folks at MINI how they could improve on the MCC, I would suggest that in addition to the fully automatic top, they implement an acessiible, simple, reliable means of raising and lowering the top completely by manual means. That would inspire more confidence in the whole concept.

if you read your owners manual it tells you how to operate the top incase of elctrical or hydralic failure. i.e loosen the allen head bolt on the hydralic motor to move the whole top up adn down. and use the allen head on the sunroof motor to open and close the sunroof.

If I had the chance to tell the folks at MINI how they could improve on the MCC, I would suggest that in addition to the fully automatic top, they implement an acessiible, simple, reliable means of raising and lowering the top completely by manual means. I've made seven warrenty covered trips to my dealer 60 miles away to fix the roof. Mostly minor issues with clunks and failure to lock down and fixing sloppy finish work from the last visit. The more I go the more I feel like they are adding problems by wearing out trim attachment points. I think I've got the idea across that the repairs have not been satisfactory (there is still a random inappropriate snapping as it locks and unlocks into the down position) and I expect a catastrophic failure which I expect will be covered even after the 50,000 miles due to the fact it was discovered at 30,000 miles and they couldn't fix it.

I put my top up and down probably 15 times a week.

This doesn't discourage me one bit about the car. Love it and love the top down.

My top had the exact same problem with only one side of the sunroof opening & was fixed. Another time the roof would not open for 3 days but it mysteriously started working again. Also every now & then it doesn't wanna open but if I reclose the sunroof & then try to start again it usually works

I am dreading the day when my warranty runs out & I too wish they would offer a completely manual top. I know technically if you have catastrophic failure you can manually raise the top using the supplied wrench but you are never supposed to lower your top that way.

Anybody elses moulding around the top cracking & curling yet? Mine just started doing that so I am going to be sure to get all of it replaced before my warranty expires.
