R50/53 CVT and EP warning
started the mini today, and where the gear is usually indicated, it read "EP". called the dealer, and they said as long as the "EML" wasn't lit the car is OK.They said it was a "computer glitch". has anyone else had this happen?
My Mini for the longest time was going in and out of limp mode. After being able to clear it by stopping, resting and restarting, this no longer worked after a while.
So, the night before I was going to Limp Mode imy Mini over 90 miles on S. Cal Highways to my dealer, I gave it a full once over.
I soon found out that I had a blown fuse in the fuse box next to my ECU. Swapped the bad fuse out with a good one and never had the problem again.
Could this be true for the 5 and 6 speed? Take a look.
It was a 15 amp fuse, number 3 or 4 from the front of the box.

It is NOT EVER OK to see EP in the display window! The trouble could be anything from a blown fuse to a defective engine wiring harness.
Just because the car runs does not mean the dealer is off the hook. You may very well be doing damage to the transmission by driving around in EP mode.
Get the car to a dealer ASAP but keep speed under 50 MPH and keep load as light as possible until it is fixed.
Good luck.

Last month, my EP light went on, too. My dealer insisted that I take the car in right away. He said it could be a computer glitch, but they had to look at it just to be sure. As it turned out, there was a faulty G.I.V. Control Unit (whatever that is), so they replaced it.
