R50/53 Pulled over for the 1st time...
For the last 24 years I have had the death of the woman that was in the back of the taxi that I all-but cut in half, on my mind. She did not die at the scene, she died in surgery a week or so later.
Had I been driving safely, had I obeyed the law, had I been less arrogent and had less belief in my abilities, maybe (probably) the crash would not have happened.
Officially the Taxi driver was found to be at fault. No action was taken against me, the consequences for the driver, the passenger and the two families where way more severe than my seven month stay in hospital.
Deep down I feel that it was really my fault.
Want to live with that ?
Now tell me how good a driver you are.......
It was a very long time ago - but that does not mean that it does not play its self over in my mind when teens brag about how wonderful a driver/rider they are
its JUST what I would say when I was that old.
Its hard to say just how wrong I actually was.

I really wish it was MUCH more difficult to get a license.... think about the lives it would save... I have my own stories and friends lost... etc... and every time I am out driving... I am amazed at what goes on.... most of all it scares me... MLE commutes everyday... and I worry... everyday

Is the humble pie done yet? :impatient
I still believe I'm a good driver. I'm very aware of the consequences of my actions and always stay alert to what's around me on the road. That doesn't mean I'm immune to accidents. Some bus driver could run a red light and hit me, it's a risk you take.
I would never want to live with the consequences of that and I am sorry that you do deal with it on a daily basis. It's the prime reason I laid off the gas as much as I did. I know that I had my moments where I'm very lucky I didn't kill myself or anyone else for that matter when I was speeding heavily.
But, hey, I know most of my friends speed. No matter what I say, or anyone else says, they're gonna do it regardless. Driving is one of those things you need to let people figure out for themselves. It's out of your control what other people do on the roadway. There are a few exceptions where you should call police, like street racing or constantly speeding through a neighborhood. That stuff is dangerous and shouldn't be tolerated.
But if a kid flies by you on the highway at 90MPH, remember you probably did the same thing at his age. Let it go.

It's like a very experienced motorcycle riding friend of mine said,on the "streets" he drives strictly according to the rules and speed limits. When he has the need for speed he attends a track day.No speed limits or oncoming traffic.
I'm 50, and consider my self to be a very competent driver, but (you know what) I thought that very same thing when I was 16 too! The only difference now, is I know I am.

something like that happened to me, except i just passed a cop and he was really staring me down and i turned the next corner and floored it to get to my alley but as i stopped at the red light at the corner he turned, and he came up behind me and told me to turn right and pull over
Turns out, i forgot my seatbelt, it really was the first time, and i had four of my friends in the car

I'm a 20 year old kid. I speed. Guess what? I still know it's stupid, but I do it anyway.
Now, this doesn't mean I go 110 in a 25 with kids playing. It means I'll go 50 in a 35 or 40. 80 on the highway.
I used to be a lot worse. I used to go 110 on the highway on a daily basis, do 70 in 35MPH zones.
"Oh my GOD!!!!! You're such a HORRIBLE PERSON AND A STUPID KID WHO DOESN'T KNOW ANYTHING!!!!"
Yeah, I'm a horrible person. I must disrespect my parents, tease little kids with speech impediments and make fun of old people...right.
Also, I may be a stupid kid who doesn't know anything, but you may be a stupid adult who doesn't know anything. You may have more experience than me, and you can also have more accidents too!
Do you guys go after 40 year old grown men who drive their Vipers fast down the highway? Or, since they are 40, they have the experience, and you let them slide. Half of you wouldn't have the guts to catch up to the guy in the Viper and start reeming him out because he is a grown man. If you did, he would probably laugh in your face (which, in case you're dumb, is what kids do when you reem them out). Well, what if the guy had just gotten the car? His experience driving his car is exactly squat, and he is more of a danger behind the wheel than I am in my car.
Kids will be kids, some learn the easy way, others learn the hard way. Let them figure it out for themselves and face the facts that a handful may be better than YOU. Just like most kids will face the facts that most adults are better than them.
And guess what. I was blessed, and I learned the easy way. I figured it out for myself. I thought about what if I hit a kid, what that entails. Then I thought about how much gas I was wasting, and I stopped my wicked speeding habits.
Let the police do their job and let the kids learn on their own how dumb their actions are. Statistics are for insurance companies, so save your rants and mind your own business.

Now even though some teens (myself being one) actually pay their gas, insurance, and make there own car payements does mean that yea they are probably very responsible for being able to do that. HOWEVER that does not mean that you are a good driver.
The point is simple, it does NOT matter who pays for what, people are bad drivers people are good drivers, just cause they are paying for what they are driving doesnt make them any better.
And the statement "I'm such a good driver" by a 16 year old (i am one of those as well) is so arrogant, but why is it any different if by a 40 year old, age makes no difference, and unless we all live out each others lives driving differently we really cant say who is a good or bad driver, so in my personal opinion this is a absolutely endless and redundant argument!
Max ... sorry about your accident
There is not point in trying to argue this. Some ppl have to learn the hardway. I did. They will need to too.
Well said. You show some wisdom
No it doesn't. You could be a lousy driver from the beginning. However, this is how humans learn ...
Where have I seen this before?
What happened then?
Whats going to happen now?
Experience IS life's greatest teacher simply because you get into more situations than you can ever imagine whether it be driving in 120 degrees in the desert or 2 feet of snow in Chicago at -5 degrees. Hopefully, people learn from their mistakes. Unfortunately, some do not.
Gen Z. I deserve it and deserve it NOW. I dont need to wait and earn anything
Things easily attained have little value
Anon.
The answer is simple ... the parents dont teach their kids the meaning of a dollar. Blame the parents.
If you continue to speed ... you WILL learn the hardway. At that is too bad. You really need to see the pictures of the 18 year girl who kissed the toll booth in her dad's porsche.
Unfortunately, you wont learn until something happens, just like me ... so I will let it slide. We all have to learn the hardway.
For the 40 years old speeding ... YOUR WRONG. Go read the p-car forums and see what happens when they talk about speeding. Some let it slide simply because with experience, they know the risks and do it alone. But many get jumped all over.

BS. YOUR speeding IS my business. It makes you a menace on the public highways but more importantly, it drives EVERYONE's insurance rates up. YOU do not live in a vacuum or an Island. YOU are part of society that has a set of norms to follow. You dont follow them, have an accident ... YOU drive OUR rates up.
So get over yourself, grow up, and REALIZE that EVERYTHING you do has ramifications far beyond your little world.:impatient
