R50/53 Trading MCS for WRX
Yeah, I know CC is less happening than Wellington and we are avoiding Auckland), but a chance to live on the South Island.
Seems like French cars woudl go at a European premium over there as well. No? That's why I was leaning towards the WRX. Plus, I'll need a hatchback, which pretty much eliminates the EVO (besides it's unrivaled ugly looks, of course), and some others.
A Classic as a second car sounds better by the minute !!!!

Continental Cars in Auckland (my dad has a client who's a saleman there and sold us a Fiat or 2) has the Stilo Abarth (used, 4000km's) at 30K and that's a pretty hot hatch with MCS like qualities.
Classics are a good route and there are plenty of sources of parts and experts in NZ to help you along.
I have good friends in CHCH so if you see a Morgan Plus 8, a Morgan Aero 8 or a Magnum PI Ferrari tell them Matt sent you
pulsar GTi-R
get a nissan, they have all the good nissans there. You could find an older 4 wheel drive turbo nissan pulsar GTi-R hatch, those things scream and have only herd good things about them! small wheel base and 4 wheel drive, they are rally machines! They are also rather cheap and from my research the engines are bomb proof and the cars can take a beating. They are not the best looking things though. for something better looking the nissan skylines are rather nice! a subaru would be good to, but you can get a subaru in the states, get something that you can't get here.
here is a link with a little info on the nissan pulsar GTi-R.

Never been to New Zealand but I have heard of people wanting to move there after visiting during a vacation.
I am in Information Technology and the wife is a technical writter. Any chance of computer savvy people like us to ever consider such exotic place to call 'home"?

Not exactly sure what you are asking, C4, but I'm pretty sure that IT is one of the areas that's in higher demand over there. Along with Pipefitters, Shepperds and Animation Gurus. No, I'm not kidding.
perhaps I am missing something
Yep, there are sheep alright.
IT pros shouldn't have too many issues getting jobs.
Avoid the Nissan's btw. Most are either used Japanese imports and/or have been thrashed to death by some punk kid. Only buy if you are sure it's a well looked after car. My brother in law (Air New Zealand Aircraft Engineer, trained in CHCH) had Skyline crap itself on him and it was not pretty.
