The case of the mischievous valet key

When using the spare key my door locks would go crazy. As I took off down the road the door locks would lock automatically like they should but would mysteriously unlock as I drove a little further. This unlocking/locking repeated continually. I mentioned this to the mechanic when I took the '06 MC in for it's first service. He asked to see the key and immediately saw the problem. The spare key and the valet key where on the same ring. He said the valet key has a magnetic strip inside that interferes with the other key's transmitter so taking the valet key off the ring should fix the problem (I'm paraphrasing here). Likely story I thought but it worked. Other people had come in with the same problem and he said they had to do alot of head scratching to figure that one out.

Fascination... The antenna for sensing the key surrounds the ingintion switch.. you can test it by bringing a key near to it and you will here the familiar "key in the ignition ping!" even when it is just located near the antenna.

This does not work on my 04 MC, is it only on certain models?

I think that didn't start until the '05's. It doesn't work on mine either.

No, it works in the '04s too. I used to do it in my '04 Cooper.

Remember when trying to set off the 'ding' to have the driver side door open!
