R50/53 Is the lug bolt pattern changing?
J A Blazer,
Answer may be yes and no. The wheels on the new MINIs may look identical, but the lug bolt holes and 60 degree cone seats may be different. I have not heard that the 4x100mm bolt pattern has changed.
Earlier this summer (August 2006, I think) BMW/MINI change the lug bolts on all new MINIs from the M12x1.5 thread, like on your 2004, to M14x1.25 (I believe). So, the wheel's holes have to be bigger diameter for the new lug bolt's maximum thread pitch.
From pictures I have seen the new lug bolts still appear to have the standard 60 degree cone seats. If you just drill out the holes (~1 mm each side), the cone seat may end up essentially farther away from the hub (by 1+ mm), So, effectively, you would lose about one thread of engagement.
To do it right, the holes would have to have their diameter opened up to clear the M14x1.25 lug bolt and cone seats bored or machined to restore full thread engagement. Not an easy thing for the do-it-yourselfer to do.
Getting longer lug bolts appears to be out of the question right now as BMW/MINI is using a somewhat unusual thread. The most likely fix to use both wheels on the same late-2006 on MINI may be a stud conversion. And, they are not available as yet.
