R50/53 Tow Hooks

Tow Hooks
I'm looking to put a tow hook on my MINI. What is the best one available? Any suggestions? I would rather have a tow hook that I install myself and know that it is going to be done right instead of having a tow company hook up my car improperly and cause damage. I have seen the solid one piece units on eBay along with the swinging type, what are the pros and cons, does anyone have any experience with either of these?

You should have an OEM one in your boot. That should reduce the problem of that happening. Now if you want something there all the time, I've seen some cool 'swinging' options that I wouldn't mind sporting, myself.

A friend of mine had one of the hinged ones on his S at Mid-Ohio when he flipped this August. When the tow truck went to hook it, the towhook broke off...INSIDE the screw threads. The hinged piece with about half an inch of stripped and broken off metal was inside his car after it was hauled back to the paddock.
The one piece OEM ones may look antiquated, but they ARE the ones supplied by BMW. If I were going to add one to my car, this is the type I would get...something FUNCTIONAL, and not just cute looking. Of course, you can always use that Plasticoat and dip it to a color you may like, other than OEM silver gray.
