This is a safety feature (and why it's caled 'safety glass'). The problem with safety glass is, the slightest chip or crack can cause the whole panel to burst into crumbs. If there was an irregularity when the panel is made, it can weaken the panel to the point of eventual failure. Some people have found that the sunroof will break if tinting is applied and the car is left in hot weather.

It's worth pointing out to the dealer that it might not have been an intentional act, but the panel just failed. Thankfully there was no other damage. Good luck in getting it resolved soon, and all those glass shards removed!
I agree. I thought there was a thread on here about this very thing. I actually hope it wasn't vandalism. If I were you, I would take some pictures of where you were parked, the conditions of the time you found it, and the weather conditions. If you play your cards right, you may get it fixed under warranty and use the information that Greatbear posted.

There is no way I see this getting fixed under warranty, although, you can probably get it fixed under insurance with only paying your deductable.

HEY! LTNS!

TFQON LIVES!

As for getting rude smells out, whether human, canine, or feline: NATURE'S MIRACLE. Available at Petco or PetSmart. Great stuff.

Or replace the interior!

Jtrem, I had cat pee in my truck one time....After trying everything, I couldn't the smell out for days. Cat pee is the worse. Eventually the smell was purged out, after lots "cleaning". I don't own the the truck anymore.

Bummer about your sunroof. I guess it could've been a lot worse. I hope the repairs and the cost work out for you. She'll be back to form soon.

Yes, there were a few reports of sunroofs breaking in the past. I personally saw one that had broken. It looked very weird because the glass had formed a hump and broken upwards.

In either case, it is a bummer to hear about this. Let us know how things turn out.

I have been scarred for life now!

Seriously man I was tortured all night by nightmares by your post!
I don't think I will ever feel good about parking my gurl anywhere now.
I had no idea I had such attachment issues
Geez - I hope that your Baby gets straightened out.
I just want you to know that I am feeling your pain - evidently more than even I was immediately aware of

Same here. I feel a bit embarrased about this but I'll confess:
I circled a restaurant parking lot 5 times Thursday night that was full, all but this one spot. BUT the car next to it was fairly new both sides and the rear end was bashed to hell and back. No way am I gonna park by a car that may or may not be so careless. Most likely they didn't have insurance. I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

I even try to park at the end spot so at least one side has a good chance of staying safe. Is this crazy or what?

Anyone else this way?
My name is Gail and I'm a Mini-holic.

There are two problems with that scenario ... well the scenario of trying to park alone, away from anyone else.

First, anyone else with a MINI will automatically park next to yours. It happens all the time ... its called "clustering". MINIs tend to cluster. In general, there's nothing wrong with that as MINIs tend to attract other MINIs and that owner probably feels your responsible. The problem comes with 3 or more MINI start to cluster. Then it just looks like a bunch of cars parked in the Boonies and someone will park next to you. BTW, I'm not joking about clustering, I've seen it happen many time

Second, some joker will park next to you and very close with his passenger side next to your door so you can barely get in ... on purpose. "They" know exactly what your doing and think your pompous for parking away from everyone else.

Thanks Everyone for your support!

Parrish- I too am a Mini-holic. And I think I've hit "Rock" Bottom.

I suppose the better part of a week gives me a little bit of perspective, and brings a small sense of humor regarding the whole thing. The good news is, Mini Roadside assistance towed it "under warranty" all the way up to Milwaukee from Kenosha. Looks like a $250 deductible should cover the damage, I'm just waiting for the insurance company to give an "Official" okay to the dealership to do the work. Meanwhile, International Mini has the glass replaced, the car mostly cleaned up (It's going in for a full interior detail on Monday- Hip Hip Hooray) and I should get her back this week before travelling for Thanksgiving.

And, while she's there, they replaced the armrest cover. The pesky bugger was loose and kept sliding open when I shifted, grrrrrr. They're also addressing a cold start/stumbling issue that seems to be re-appearing after a software upgrade and some "Fuel Education." So, at least I'm getting some other stuff taken care of in the meantime.

Again, Thanks everyone (especially those who read this whoooooole post!)

So this has a silver lining after all!
I'm so happy for you, not only getting your baby back by Thanksgiving, but having all those spiffy things done as well.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving

Bring on the Tryptophan!

One time, many years ago (pre-MINI, of course), I had the misfortune to come out to my car, parked well away from everyone else, in this very situation. I could not even get between the two cars much less open the door. This on an extremely rainy day to boot. I did the only thing I could think of to salvage the day, which was get in on the passenger's side.

Not before pulling the wiper blades for both wipers on that car.

Dude, i had the windshield of a Nissan spontaniously explode on me, and the actual origin of the failure looked like a bullet hole (although i never found a bullet and the car was sitting in the drive) Scared the crap out of me too. The sound was unnerving.
Is it covered under the warranty?
