R50/53 Anyone else have problems with the close pedals?
I can't believe you guys are complaining about pedals being to close.. I've always had the opposite problem on some of my other manual cars. IMO, the MINI has one of the best pedal configurations that I've driven. I can easily blip the throttle and brake at the same time when downshifting and I've never caught my gas pedal unintentionally..

I was nervous when i went to look / test drive my mini. It's a standard and i wear size 12 shoes. I was suprised about how much room i had under there. I have to admit that one wrong move could cause problems..but so far so good!
Troubles
I use my size 14 indoor soccer shoes. I was lucky enough to make a mistake with my last online order and two pairs of indoor soccer shoes arrived. Tough brake, er, break. Now I drive to the soccer field, take off my silver soccer shoes and put on my silver soccer shoes. And you think you have troubles just because you hit the gas when you want to hit the brake!
Oh, my hiking boots take an extractor to go from the gas to the brake. Not wearing the hiking boots to drive in is a good solution. My MINI doesn't have enough room to carry hiking boots anyway.

Well, I wear 11.5 and only have occasional trouble if I am wearing work shoes or work boots with wide bottoms.
Running shoes, dress shoes, etc. are no problem at all.
Some of these guys said they wear 13 or 14 so I suppose that is the difference.

I took a good long look at the pedals this morning, and the brake and clutch pedals are tiny. I can't imagine any aftermarket being narrower. An the problem for me is that with my big fat wide foot against the middle "hump" on the right side of my shoe, it only has 3/8" clearance on my shoe's left side and the brake pedal. If the right side of my foot isn't right against the hump, I snag the left side on the brake pedal when I lift off the throttle to apply the brake.
I swear this is the only issue for me (and a very minor one). I LOVE this car. I think I'll take a dremel to some old shoes and grind down the width of the sole as much as I can. (Cajun driving shoes)

I have a 2005 MC with 205/55r15's and no other performance mods. I find the pedals perfect!!! For heel/toe down shifting that is. After some track days, I was instructed to start heel/toe down shifting to match the engine RPM's to the speed of the car so when I let out the clutch the car doesn't get upset.
I've been driving like this for about 6 months and it is just second nature now and the shifter just falls into the next lower gear and the car's nose doesn't dive any.
The engineers have designed this car so well. What a blast to drive this car!

Sorry I also wanted to mention that when braking, I do it with just the left side of my right foot and rock my foot and blip the gas while I'm double clutching. I was considering a driving shoe, but I'm afraid the shoe might be to narrow for my driving style.
I wear an 11 and 1/2 and a 12 in timberland boots which are my school shoes, so i keep a pair of addidas in the trunk that i change out of/into every time i get to school
When I was driving my MINI, I usually wore sandals, which I slipped off after getting into the car. Driving barefoot really has its advantages as heel-toe shift is so much easier. If you don't like driving barefoot, try some racing shoes as they tend to be form fitting.
So that might help get your wide feet in there and not accidentally hit the wrong pedal.

Shoes vs. Pedals
With size 13 shoes I find that running shoes or boots definitely get in the way. I've switched to driving shoes for daily wear and don't regret it at all. My favorites are some Pilotis like these: http://www.carmansgarage.com/c=lg8D0...roduct/PPR12-2 They are very comfortable for daily wear and work great in the MINI.
One thing I didn't see mentioned: some folks that aren't having this problem are you driving a 6spd or AT? I expect only 6spd drivers will experience this problem.

Piloti shoes
Regarding the Pilotis for walking, I find them very comfortable. I haven't walked miles and miles in them but they have been great for normal work, dog walking, and mall trolling trips. I find them a little more comfortable than a pair of Puma Speed Cats I have.

Simpson makes them, the black version of this one for example:

Personally, I love the pedals the way they are, and I wear a size 14 or 15. Just roll your foot a little and use the edge of a shoe if you feel the need to.
