R50/53 Emergency escape?
Curious to know if anyone has tried to get out of their MINI using the emergency cable release to open the boot. We get this helpful diagram:

. . . so, now what? How do you get the seat backs unlatched so that you can crawl out? I'm thinking you might be able to lift the parcel shelf and reach behind, but I haven't actually tried this (it would involve bending the old bod into a shape it would not like!). Anyone?

I've also wondered how you'd do this if you actually had passengers in the rear seats.
Hey, that could be a fun game to play at one of the rallies. Put 4 people in each car, lock em up and then start the clock. The first ones to break out of their MINI wins.

He he he... I like the game idea
But seriously...
there have been other threads about this and I believe we've come to the conclusion (or, at least, this is what I was told and I believe it) that you needn't ESCAPE from your MINI via the boot. The doors have a mechanical (non-electrical) safety feature built in, which is why you pull the handle twice. The emergency boot release comes in handy in case of electrical failure, as the hatch is not equipt with a manual override, as it were. It's just so you can get to the battery.
But I mean... please don't let me stop you from attempting to crawl out of your boot. Whatever floats your boat, you know? Creativity is a motorers prerogative--that's why we have MINIs
Happy unlatching,

I'm confused. Are you saying the door will unlock without electrical power by pulling twice?

Ahhhh, but twice this winter, I have had a door (first passenger, then driver side) freeze up in ice. It cannot be opened. Thankfully, my olympic athletic style body allows me to climb over the the other side to get out. If however...the other door freezes too....out da boot!

I was actually thinking of extenting that loop handle and putting a red pullstring on it out past the seats, so I did not have to take the seat apart. This would be useful when there are rear passengers.
Has anyone done this? I right now I'm thinking a Cable Tie is easiest, perhaps a red one. Or something like on the pull string of a lawnmower only smaller....

Jeez, relax everyone. When was the last time you had to crawl out the rear hatch of a car? From the sounds of it, even if you guys did manage to get the boot open, your egress would be blocked by the hoards of duct tape you probably have stockpiled back there.
<<Now to throw you back into reality as I remind you that most of the people that attend MINI rallies are guys>>
In that case you can DEFINITELY count me among the observers! Wa-hooooo!
Practically,

Well Vespa, I have to disagree with you here. While it's not at all a common occurence, it is possible that both doors could freeze shut as Bob notes (I've had both freeze tight while I was in the car...just not both at the same time). When that happens, the "two pulls" thing doesn't work. And if it came to that, I'd be crawling out of the boot too. The car's not big enough to store enough emergency rations to get me by until it thaws out.
>>>your egress would be blocked by the hoards of duct tape you probably have stockpiled back there.
No No No, the back would be SEALED with the duct tape and plastic, that's what would slow you down getting out.

Omigod -- what have I started!
This thread was partially inspired by the picture of the MINI driving into the back of a humongous motor home. Someone asked how you'd get out, given that the doors wouldn't have room to open inside the thing. Rear exit is the only option.
Okay -- naked, half drunk emergency escape competition -- sign me UP! I guess I'll have to start yoga training to get my flexibility back but I do like the idea of manuvering around inside a small space dans la nudité with a select group of friends

One time at band camp- Oops wrong story. I had a 1977 280 Z and once someone (actually two someones ) parked so close I had to go in through the hatch!

On another thread spawned by this topic (Important safety information..Please read!), conecarver has illuminated the method of escape:
Okay, so when does the naked, inebriated MINI escape contest begin?
As for getting out of the boot the shelf will pose little issue.... use the remote boot release.... push open the tailgate.... once open the shelf can easily be pushed out so it will just flap around on the tailgate teathers... fold down seat... and you are free.....
>>>>...and you should do it after 2 glasses of wine, and all in the buff!
Sort of like naked twister. If it wasn't so messy one could do it with all covered in oil.
>>Now to throw you back into reality as I remind you that most of the people that attend MINI rallies are guys.
Hey, sounds good. Where do I sign up?

MINE's MISSING!
I'm entered into a show and had to unplug the battery. I then went to close the Boot. Not a problem.
THEN I TRY to OPEN it, no electiry, no power can't open it. Okay then I think "I will just pull that trusty ring and open the boot from the inside"
NOT! I pull the entire rear seat cushon off (bottom) and there is no ring! The little metal place for it to go is there but NO RING!!!
I had to push the top shelf out the way and jam my arm down to get to the latch behind the seat. Now I can reattach the battery when I need to and open the boot normaly. but there's stil not a way to open it without power.
I am calling MINIUSA in the morning and taking "Artoo" straight to the dealer to get this fixed.
I suggest eveyone just take a quick look beneath their seat and make sure it's there.
