I'm be pissed when a car enthusist would come in and buy a car from me and we'd have a great time during the sale. Then the client would come in for service and be totally dissapointed by the service department.

I'd be an MA except.....

Actually, I can't think of a good reason. Perhaps I'll call Ferman today and see if they are looking for anyone........

Thanks all!

Work hours... I'm not sure about being an MA either but I wake at 4:30am and get home at 7:45pm on the days I work and I work every other Sat, Sun, Mon, regardless of holidays. It pays well but my job can be somewhat depressing. I've missed a lot of MINI events thanks to IBM's non-stop chip making business...
I too work for IBM. Only an IBM employee would consider the working hours at a Mini dealership attractive. I wonder how good the MA employee benefits are, --wife and I had a kid last November, cost us $4,900 out-of-pocket with the lame benefits we now get from IBM.

Maybe they were selling Mini Coopers as tiny condos on wheels up until recently, and now that the real estate market has crashed in Miami the MA income numbers are more realistic. You did notice he said "were" and not "are" when quoting those income numbers? The real estate bubble has burst in Florida, and the losers are going to be everywhere, not just in the real estate business.

Also it seems that the more commisioned based advisors are at dealers that were charging markups. The bump on the MSRP price is all dealer profit...which means higher commisions!! When you are asking for 5k over sticker at least 1k of that goes to the MA.

just curious, and perhaps this is a stupid question or a trade secret... how do dealers make money off of a car if they are charging MSRP? I'm assuming the MSRP has a percentage built in that automatically goes to the dealer? If so, then I also assume that a percentage of that goes to the MA as a commision?

do dealers that sell more cars also get more allotments?

I never have understood the car dealer business very well... i'm just wondering.

It is MSRP - which is Manufacturer's Suggested RETAIL price.... not MSWP - Wholesale price.
They have a profit built into that price they give you.
Believe me, the car dealers make money. It would be my guess that if there is a discount the MA takes a hit more than the dealer if it is a commission sale... just a guess on that though.

they sell the car itself cheap and try to make money by
adding options and also by getting reimbursed for services
performed.

it's like your cel phone. the phone itself is cheap, add
more features on your service and buy accessories, things
get pretty expensive pretty fast.

Ken, you just hit upon the classic wall-to-wall carpeting sales strategy.

years ago, carpet salesmen kept trying to sell carpets to homeowners until they figured out their true buyers were new home builders ... bury the cost into the price of the house.

Cell phone companies figured out the true profit was in those two year contracts so they give the phones away.

MINI dealers make much of their profit on the $400 they charge to install driving lights

A sucker born every minute.:impatient

I still think a nightmare scenario would be someone throroughly versed in NAM mythology ... knows all the problems ... the costs of doing things aftermarket ...

When I went to MINI training back in 03 I heard of some dealerships that had their advisors on commision. They got paid on a percentage of the GROSS profit on the car dea. If you have extra cash markup that goes to the gross which then adds to your percentage of the comission...This is just what I was told by a few salesguys in the so cal area.

This varies from dealership to dealership. Any markup does increase the gross however its up to the dealership if the MA gets paid on the mark up which is usually not the case for dealership I know.
I was offered a position as an MA but turned it down a few days ago......

Being an MA would be cool, but I don't know if I can pull the same salary I do now. That in addition to the distance I live from my closest dealership.

I would be an MA, but I cherish my soul and have no intention of selling it to Satan.
