R50/53 RPM Gauge Lights
Just wondering what the unlit lights on the tachometer are. I was hoping that they turn yellow when the needle gets there much like a racing tach with a light. Wasn't sure and still have only 900mi., give me another few hundred miles and then that red zone will be familiar territory
There was a thread on this a little while ago.
I think the consensus is that the lights don't currently do anything...but that the potential exists for them to be programed to behave like on the M3. Yet another electronic secret of the MINI that has been locked away from us. :???:

I doubt it, I took the tach apart before and the last 6 lines light up from the same LED.

Hhhmmm,
I think this is actually so that the same tach can be used for different engines, saving on manufacturing costs. The same tach is used for the MINI One, Cooper, Cooper S and now probably MINI One D in Europe. All of these engines have different redlines, and so instead of making different tachs a different number of LEDs lights up to illustrate the rev limit of the particular engine.
Of course, once you have this in place you could use the LEDs to program a temperature-dependent red line, but I don't know of any MINI plans to implement this.
Cheers,
Markus
