I know that MINIs are special but seriously, this is a new one on me:

I've just acclamated myself to the very great production that Ollie makes of getting fuel--thunking, etc--but today, when I removed my gas cap, it sang. Harmonics. Loudly. VERY loudly. I backed away slowly and waited for the singing to stop, but now I'm confused: why did my gas cap (or, technically, the removal thereof) sing? Should I just qwit mah bitchin and enjoy the serenade or do I need an exorcist? (which brings up a whole nuther set of problems because I think Ollie is Jewish)

And while we're on the subject, what IS the deal with the thunking right before (and sometimes after, as well) the pump shuts off? I've taken this for normal, but I'm curious.

Musically,
~Kelley

Kelley,
So far I have been the only one to put gas in my MINI. But yesterday my husband did while I was sitting inside the car. Right after he finished I also heard a loud clunking noise!!!! It went away fairly quickly & did not come back. Does anyone else know what this might be?

I've read several reports of this from MINI owners right here in the area where I live. IMHO, just enjoy it! If fact...(whisper) if there's any tips you have on recreating this phenomenon, I'd love to get my Cooper to sing!!!

jds...

I'll have a little chat with Ollie tonight and see if he has any suggestions about getting other MINIs to follow his lead. The possibilities are endless: MINI choral group, MINI caroling, MINI record deal... But I think (whispering) that he maybe got sick of listening to ME sing all the time.

Was the singing possibly caused by the release of air from the tank when removing the cap??

I actually noticed this for the first time the other day. I was near empty, so I figure it was because of some sort of vacuum that is created as the fuel level is decreased. Nonetheless, it was a pretty interesting sound.
