Remote Key not working

I just bought a 2004 Cooper S (Chili Red, 40 year Monte Carlo Anniversary Edition) and the remote on the key is not working. None of the buttons to open or close the doors are working.

The dealer where I bought it gave me the following instructions:

- put key in ignition and turn ignition on
- remove key
- hold unlock button pressed and press lock button 3 times

It's not working though. The battery in the key should be recharded by now.

Anybody else seen this? Any tips?

Thanks.

I thought it took longer than a second to recharge...like a few minutes to charge enough to send the single properly.

If it's the older style key than you might just have to flat out replace the battery. The new (I think they started using it on the 05s) key has 3 buttons on it standard: Unlock, Lock (the MINI wings), and Boot.

If your key doesn't have those buttons you probably need to replace the battery in the key.

THere is a process, I have a copy of it in my glove box (I think/hope) but I got it off of NAM, if you have to keys have the second one handy, if only one key then the process is a little quicker. I somehow accidentally did half of the process to deactivate it, going through the full sequence fixed my issue, let me see what I can find....

This may be a silly question, but isn't this "programming" simply the process they describe on pp22 of the owner's manual? Look under "Keys", "Initializing the master key with remote control". They have two very simple processes.

This process is supposed to be used "when you activate a master key with remote control (replacement, ADDITIONAL KEY, or after a battery change), it must be initialized." (my CAPS)

They give you two options:

1. "press button 1 or button 2, see pp 24, four times in succession, OR

2. if the vehicle is unlocked:
(a) switch the ignition on briefly (position 2) and then off
(b) within 10 seconds, press button 1 and button 2, see pp 24, in succession.

(ps: all pp24 shows is a figure of the key, and which button is "1", and which is "2&quot
This seems a little different (and much older) but may be worth a try, I'll keep digging for what helped me...

Again different but possibly helpful...

this was in my 04 manual under "keys"

1) press the unlock button or the lock button 4 times in succession....presumably do this near the car although it doesn't say

or

2) briefly turn on the car, then turn the key off 1/2 way so leaving the car in #2 position.....then within 10 seconds, press the unlock button, then press the lock button

3) cross your fingers....oops, that should be #1 I guess
Another explination, off to check out MINI2 and see if they have the porcedure I'm looking for.

The instructions I had only had one piece of the puzzle wrong. Here is the right way.

You need to have all the keys with you when you get in the car.

1. Get in the car and shut the doors. (don't open any of the doors until you are complete.

2. Put a key in the ignition and turn it to the first click, then back and take the key out. You need to do within five second I was told and that is what I did.

3. HOLD DOWN the unlock button, and press the lock button 3 times, then release the unlock button. The doors of the car should lock or unlock. Don't touch the doors or door locks.

4. The wrong directions I had said to repeat all the steps from the beginning. The wrong part is that once you put another key in the ignition it ends/restarts the programming sequence.

5. So once the doors have locked/unlocked then just do step 3 with the other keys. Just hold down the unload button, press the lock 3 times and release the unlock button.

6. Once you do this will all the keys then you can open the door or put a key in the ignition and the programming is ended.

7. Then try the lock and unlock on all the keys. If they don't work you can try it again to make sure you didn't screw it up but if after that then it sounds like a trip to the dealer.

Hope this helps. Steve.

Thanks for all the quick replies

I've tried both described options and none worked. According to the dealer, the battery is supposed to be rechargeable, but maybe it's just broken.

I'll look for a new battery and try again.

Thanks again for all the help! Glad to be here

Well, not to say that the dealer is wrong, but the dealer is wrong!

The battery is rechargeable for '05 models on. For '04 and earlier, it's a fairly easy to find CR2032 button battery. Just pop open the key/remote casing, and the battery is held on by a little clip. It should be about a 2 minute operation replacing the battery!

As a side note though, it would be kind of odd that a battery for a 2004 key would be dead already. I have a 2004, and have put over 70,000 miles on it. I use the same key nearly the whole time, and it still works fine... Of course, it could just have been a bad battery in the first place!

Good luck!

-Paul!

I have a somewhat similar problem with one of my keys.
The locking button works but the unlock button doesn't.
On the working key, I can feel a slight pressure on the wings compared to limp-mode on the non-operational wings.

Anyone had this problem?

I'd go back top the dealer and make him/her do it! That is what they are paid for.

Just be sure to take the long way via twisty roads.

Don't touch the battery contacts (+ and - sides), i.e., use a tissue or a gloved hand to insert the new battery. Properly dispose of the old one.
Welcome to the NAM gang!
