Pardon my Mini...or...MCS Flatulence
I have about 525 miles on my 2006 MCS and boy is it ever a flatulent beast. I've read about the purposeful introduction of the exhaust 'blurble' beginning with the 2005 model but boy...it's a little embarrasing sometimes.
I actually enjoy the throaty blurble during engine breaking but I'm a little put off by the muted backfire-like pop pop during shifting from 1st to 2nd and sometimes even 2nd to 3rd.
Are some vehicles just more 'gassy' than others?
How gassy is your 2005 or later MCS?
Does your Mini sneak off to judge chili cook offs every night?

Ive only had mine for about 100 miles now, and mine is quite the belcher, much like a riced out Honda... Normally shifting 1st-3rd Ill get a couple blurbles each shift. I thought for a moment that maybe something was wrong.. But seems to be natural.
I have a MCSa so I dont have the burbble when it shifts.
I do hear it if I go WOT, and then completly let off the gas. Its revs down really slow and its just burburburburburburbble.
Its does seem to have quite a bit of flatulence. IMHO, I think that the '05s are the most "gassy."

As others have stated.. it's normal.. The stock exhaust does nothing to make it sound good. I changed out the stock exhaust for a Milltek system. It's a cat-back system and one of the quietest systems made... it makes the exhaust burbles sound very distinguished. It sounds like it should... nothing sharp or edgey like the stocker... now its a nice natural sounding burble.... and WOT runs are a symphony of exhaust sounds and supercharger whine..
You can control it without too much trouble. I can prevent it if I really don't want to call too much attention. The more throttle you use, the harder it is to control but even at wide open it can be prevented. Just don't let off the gas all the way, keep the accelerator down just a pinch. Give it a try, with a bit of practice it can be controlled.

I felt the same way when I got the 05 MCS such that I was slightly embarrassed in parking lots to hear the almost tinny pop pop pop!
I am now glad because it caused me to consider an aftermarket system, something I've never done before. I got the Milltek and I have absolutely loved it. It sounds awesome and in slow driving situations I purposely back off to hear the throaty pop pop pop. If you can do it get the Milltek or any of the others. The Milltek does not drone at highway speeds. I can't speak for the others. You won't regret it.

My 05 MCS doesn't do it AT ALL...I've even tried to make it do it. Not sure why though, still stock exhaust and all. Maybe has something to do with it being bought in Europe....I really have no idea.
thats probably gonna be stuck with you cause the 2006 MCS i just bought has 3800 miles on it and it really nelches, if you nail it at redline though, there usually isnt much

I love the throatiness and the fact that I even set off one of the more sensitive car alarms in the parking lot where my wife works, lol...
coasting down at about 3000 RPMs to a stop in second gear seems to yield a lot of ehaust popping and turning heads. I'm just glad I don't have one of those big "fart cans" sticking out the back end... they look absolutley absurd - and usually sound that way, IMO.
