My view WRT convertibles: Have an alarm, leave it unlocked (and nothing of value that isn't in the boot.) At least that's what I do with my Miata. I know lots of people who've had their tops slashed. The OEM alarm for the MINI convertible is a bit of conundrum, as it forces you to lock the car to turn on the alarm.
