Belt Squeal?

Hello! I thought this would be the best place for it, if not please move.

Anyway, yesterday my Serpentine? Belt started to squeal. Anywho, I asked my brother and he said maybe it was wet. I got up today and went to work, and it's still squealing. It only squeals while idling...once I get going it stops.

My question is this, how can I tell if it's cracked/needing to be replaced? I'm guessing this is the stock belt that came with the car (03', 48k miles) and can I do it myself. I really want a reduction pully, and would like to do it at the same time (seeing as I need to replace the belt with a shorter one anyway)....but I have to pay off the car before I can mod it, which will not be until the end of this year/start of next year. Should I follow a pully how-to and go for it? Is there an easier way? The MINI dealer is only 10min from my house but I know this won't be covered under warrenty and they are going to rape me on labor.

What should I do? And where can I get a belt if I need one?

Thanks,
-Cody

The belts are pretty cheap. Call classic, one of the vendors, and they will give you the NAM discount. I dont think you need a shorter belt unless you go 19%? I know you dont for 15.

17% and 19% require a shorter belt. At least that is what ALTA's website says.

I want to go with a 17% ALTA, or maybe a 16% M7 to be safe, but I don't think a 16% would require a new belt?

My belt squeeks too. I notice that it squeeks on hot days. Not only while idling. Its REALLY annoying, so I'll ask the dealer during the oil change.

Would this be covered under warrenty? Since I have less than 2k miles before my warrenty ends, I would like to get it done for free if I can, because it requires a lot of work.

my 04 MC has been stating to squeal when I first start up and turn the wheel either way...then goes away

I have not called the dealer, but I have to call them anyway because for the last month most of the time when I first start up in the morning, right away, the car stalls and then runs rough for the first 30 seconds but then runs perfectly all day
