Hidden costs and help for the ladies out there...

Oh yeah, sometimes the oil change package or other service work does not include the "Shop Supplies" fees. This is an "environmental" charge in some states or this is some other supposed cost to the dealer they pass on to the consumer because they can. Another reason to do this all yourself.

Ladies out there that are afraid of getting ripped off...I suggest you ask your local car club to hold clinic on oil changing, fluid topping, and tire rotation. Or check out your local vocational school as they sometimes have a one day or evening class on how to do some of this basic car maintenance stuff. You'll be wiser to the auto world and happy you have the know-how.

I paid over $300 at Rasmussen MINI for "Inspection II". They also hooked me up with A LOT of extras at A VERY reasonable price. I may have paid a sack of doubloons for service, but I got my sack's worth!

then they let me drive a brand new 5-series...
uh oh...

One of the Xmas presents from my parents last year was just what I needed, a 3000 lb capacity floor jack. Best car "investment" I've made to date... Rather than paying MINI $80.00 per tire rotation or set change, I just do it myself in 25 minutes. Already paid for itself I'm sure.
When my "freebie" oil changes period expires, I'll be changing my own. $330.00 is insanity. There are ways to save a few bucks. :-)

If you dont want to change the oil yourself, and lots of people don't. It can be a hassle (got to recyle the old oil, etc.)

Find a local independent shop that specializes in German cars like Bimmers and Mercedes. I paid about $60 including the oil at an independent and as far as I was concerned, no fuss, no muss.

$330 for an oil change clearly beats the $240 I paid my dealer to mount and balance four tires. Then again, I paid, and you merely got a quote, so I guess I am still worse off than you.

OK...I'm not b/s'ing...Concord MINI in NorCal quoted me this price and there is no inspection, just a straight oil change.

I'm NOT KIDDING. I found a few other places locally here that will change my oil for $53.

I'm looking into changing the oil myself now -- thanks for the advice!

I'll call them again and ask, I'm sure the person who answered the phone was misinformed or delusional. $330 REALLY....

Sounds way too expensive to me.

I'll change your oil for only $325.

OK, so I called Concord MINI again and they quoted $250 for an oil change. I also called East Bay MINI and got a $75 quote...much better.

$250 oil change:

Oil filter
synthetic oil
top off all fluids

That's it...to all East Bay people...don't go there!

I paid about $60 for an oil change at Momentum MINI last week.

I didn't ask in advance what it was going to cost. If the bill had been over $300, I would have lost it.

I'll go $315, and that'll include my airfare from Boston.

Seriously, this is not a difficult thing to do yourself, and it's so much more satisfying.

Filter = $8
Oil = $25-50

One time expenses:
Rhino ramps = $30
Torque wrench = $30 (from tirerack.com)
36mm socket = $6 from Sears
Beer = ?
