In need to know the truth about pulleys.

Hi all,
I think of seriously getting a 15% pulley. The only problem is California's stupid smog laws. Will thhe pulley affect the smog test to make it fail. I know about the visual part. I am not really worried about that. Who has had a smog check with a 15%? Thanks in advance.

all 2002s are not for smog until this year. I don't see how a pulley would increse emmissions though.

The pulley only causes the SC to spin faster. As you'll never be in boost during a smog test, you should see no difference on the smog-o-meter. Even if you were, the pair of 02 sensors work to make sure the exhaust is clean, or it gives you a nasty little light.

FWIW, I've got a '91 Miata with an Eaton SC. After ten years, it finally failed. Then again, in that application you add an AFPR. The MINI should be good to go.

The pulley change will increase the air flow into the engine.
That might confuse the engine computer so it doesn't properly control the air/gas mix - this in turn could cause emissions issues. As Eric points out, the cat should correct this, but I've known a few people kill their cat early because of engine mods.

It's recommended to update the engine programming if you change the pulley. A few options out there, including "Unichip" and NAM sponsor MTH.

The feedback from the O2 sensors and MAP will keep the AFR same as stock.
The only time you will run into problems is with smaller pulleys when the stock injectors can't supply enough fuel.
These cars run rich from the factory. A 15% pulley can actually give you the same or better mileage as many have reported. It is making use of the already rich mixture and keeping in a safe AFR range.
