Rolls-Royce Resting Comfortably
BMW Group is quite happy with the brand’s profits, thanks very much.
Rolls-Royce is on track and preparing to sell as many as 1000 ultra-expensive vehicles during 2005, according the company's acting chairman.
Stefan Krause, BMW's chief financial officer, who also is currently serving as Rolls-Royce's acting chairman, says he is more than satisfied with Rolls' performance in 2004. He expects another solid year in 2005 for the ultra-luxury Phantom, which has become a favorite of the wealthy buyers shopping for a car in the rarified $350,000 price range.
Krause said Rolls-Royce sold 797 cars during 2004. BMW was pretty happy with the results, Krause said. "No other manufacturer has ever sold, at these prices, as many cars of one model in a year. That's pretty good," Krause added. "The second thing is it's very difficult to judge this market. We're learning how this market reacts and develops," he added.
The Rolls-Royce Phantom that BMW introduced in 2003 has clearly become the dominant car in the niche, Krause said. "We clearly outsold Maybach. We're also very happy with the business in the United States. It's about half the volume," Krause added.
"The United States is exceeding expectations," he said. Rolls-Royce also did very well in the oil-rich countries of the Arabian Peninsula and in East Asian markets such as Hong Kong. "They also met expectations," he said.
Krause also noted sales picked up in the second half of 2004, reaching 80 units in December and boosting hopes for total sales of 1000 units during 2005. "We're confident with this number," he added, particularly if economies begin to strengthen and grow, he suggested. Sales in Europe, particularly in Germany, were disappointing last year, Krause acknowledged. In addition, makers of the ultra-luxury cars appear to have run in to something of a backlash against conspicuous consumption brought on the slow economic growth, Krause said.
"Europe has been the weak spot. We had higher expectations of what we could achieve in Europe," he said. "In these Calvinistic countries of Central Europe understatement is very important. A Rolls-Royce limousine is not something you can hide on the road," he said. "There are lots of people who have the money to buy a $350,000 car but it's just not something they would do," he said.
The convertible Rolls-Royce that BMW has now shown at auto shows in Geneva and again in Detroit also will expand the line in 2006 or 2007, Krause said.
Someone who spends over $350k on a car doesnt want to pull up next to someone in a $40K Rolls.......its that simple.

I don't care for your articles that reflect "reality." Reality has a well-known liberal bias.
