What happens to an "S" when the supercharger is disconnected?

OK...besides the obvious...less power...are there any reasons an "S" can not have it's supercharger disconnected?

Let me explain:

I'm in the market for an MC...but in the used marketplace, it seems like 90% are MCS's.

Part of the reason I want an MC instead of an MCS, is the fuel economy...plus, somehow an MC seems more "pure", and it's still a LOT of fun to drive, even with so much less power than the MCS.

So...

I'm wondering if I bought an MCS, then disconnected the supercharger, would it be driveable? Would the computer operate the car OK, etc? Are there any mechanical or technical reasons why the supercharger could not be disconnected?

I know...strange topic.

Um. But a Cooper is going to be cheaper... Why pay for the S if you don't want an S?

Well, like I said, fuel economy, "pure-ism" (OK, that's not that important), and sheer availability...if I want, say, this color and that combo of packages, etc, there's a LOT more choice in MCS's than MC's.

Mechanically, the water pump is attached to the back of the supercharger - you'd have to still spin it to avoid destroying the engine!

Well, lets see....

The Cooper has about 115HP - the S has about 168HP ( stock ). Without the SC the S would have ALOT less HP than an MC. Let me explain....The SC is a air pump that is INLINE - it can not be bypassed by simply taking the belt or pully off - if the SC is not turning then there is very little air getting by it - therefore a HUGE restriction in the intake. Also the stock compression ratio of a MC is about 10.? : 1 and the comp. ratio of a S is about 8.? : 1 -- so with out a SC the S motor will make LESS HP than a stock MC even under ideal conditions. Will the electronics run a non-SC engine -- maybe, but it will not run well.

The cure is to remove the SC and all related intake parts ( intercooler, etc ) and install orig. MC intake parts. Then either have the computer flashed to a std. MC program or replace the computer with a MC computer.

Will all this work? I have no idea:impatient It seems like alot of work to detune a S so you can have a "pure" MC.

If you can get a S cheaper than a MC, then I say buy the S and have some fun with it - they are a blast to drive

Oh, by the way - I didn't even get into the Tranaxle - I don't know how a detuned S would handle everyday driving with the stock S transaxle???

Probably not. Compression ratio is way too low.

Brilliant! A thread where an MCS owner is trying to build their car into a Cooper instead of the other way around (for once).

This makes me happy...

If you want better mileage, the easy things are to make sure you have enough air in the tires, and shift at lower RPMs.

The check engine light comes on, the car runs like *** and it eventually overheats.

The supercharger bypass valve is included as a means to approximate disconnecting the blower at part throttle. Some of the mechanical drag remains, but the pumping losses are minimized somewhat. The remaining drag, along with the lower compression ratio are the primary factors in the MCS economy being less than a MC.

Take the spring out of the by-pass valve...

But it would suck to drive, for all the reasons listed above. Or use the set-screw to keep it from closing all the way, to limit boost. But that's going backwards.......

Yes, several.

No.

This is really a non-starter (probably literally). Just shop till you find an MC that you like.

Removing the supercharger from an "S" is like ordering a cheeseburger without the cheese....

I did that once! The place only had 'cheeseburger' on the menu and I didn't want cheese.

buy an 'S' with a blown motor and then drop a 'Cooper' motor in it

Thank goodness....

Why buy a used MC when U can configure a new one the way you want it, pay not much more, and have the full warranty and mtce.? Plus, the 05s on are much better cars with the Getrag 5 speed as opposed to the generally clunky Midland tranny, and U could do a JCW lite to give it more oomph. Maybe snag a dealer demo?

Last year after Katrina used Coopers of all kinds were hard to get; who knows what will happen here if gas averages over $3/gal. I say go new! (if U can.) Jimbo

Thanks...

Many... compared to the '02-'03 cars.

Better seat mecahnisms
More interior storage
Less prone to rattles
Better suspension adjustment capabilities
Better door hinges (the old ones rust, fast...)

I'm sure there's more.

yea, you cant just remove the belt from the supercharder, the tensioner doesnt work that way. but...you COULD make a LARGER SC pulley. I just kidding with this, but if you had , say , a 50% increase pulley. you would, of course be running only 5psi as opposed to 10.5. that would reduce the SC effect...lol

You can't just disconnect the S in MCS. It is part of a designed system with other internals dependant upon it working.

What you can do is buy an S and drive it easy... you will get good mileage... yet when you need the extra power... it will be there...
It's always better to have some power on tap for when you need it..

You have to use premium anyway... might as well get something for it...
