Exactly. I test drove the new GTI with the DSG gearbox & it sold me on the MCS. It's just too darn big. It also didn't help that the interior was so dark that it felt like I was driving around in a cave. That gearbox is sweet, but the whole package just wasn't for me.

Sorry, Chows4us, no dry sump in the Cayman. You need to get a GT3 to get the dry sump... or a 10 year old 993.

I felt the same way after a drive in a new M5

I agree with that, too.

When I was young, the Corvette was the car to lust after, especially watching Route 66 in the '60s. But THAT lost its allure in the mid-70s when it seemed everyone had one, and as in an above post, it seemed to become the working man's car. The Porsche has now lost some its allure, at least for me. Of course I could be at that stage of "Been there, done that". My MINI may have had something to do with that.

I agree with the first half of your sentence but NOT the second half. There are MANY MINI owners who are not "drivers" but just own the car .... you can't go by just the enthusiasts boards since they do not represent the masses.

Barely. See http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/staticfiles...lTheftData.pdf
Actually more MINIs stolen that 997 but more MINIs sold than 997.

While the Z06 is certainly the best buy for the money, its not in the same class as a Carrera GT.

What class is the Carrera GT in other than its own class? As I said before, unless you're racing on the track, which is where you SHOULD be when exercising the FULL power of a loaded up Porsche, why do you need the speed? Most cars like the MINI are fast enough for the American highways where the speed limit on most interstates are 65 to 75 tops. Great for the Germans on the Autobahn. Gas isn't getting any cheaper and the cars and SUVs are getting any smaller any time soon. (I suggest you watch Mad Max, a movie that should be re-released in the USA.)

I dont necessarily disagree with that statement. I disagreed with the statement that not all MINI owners are driver cause they are many who are just commuters (for example).

Unfortunately, you can extrapolate that arguement to any "fast" car like most any BMW or AUDI "limited" to 155 mph. After all, where are you going to drive that fast in the US (I am not going to fall into the trap about excessive speed here because clearly people do and some get caught)

You have a "valid" point. Most Americans are hung up on 0 - 60 times when in fact, how often does anyone really care about that.

If your talking about handling, as I have referenced before, the Boxster S has the R&T Slalom records beating the Enzo it replaced.

However, Yup, you got it right ... all that power is not needed and yet GM sells the Z06 capable of 197 MPH!

The rumour mill has it that the 07 Boxster S will use the same engine as the Cayman S (with a big price increase) and the Cayman will use the same engine as the current Boxster so Porsche can more easily use the same parts between the cars.

That would put the pricing structure back where it should be with the Roadster the same or higher than the Coupe, ala the M Roadster and Coupe.

I traded a 2005 Lotus Elise in on my MCS (couldn't afford the Elise). I'll bet it's the same kind of relation as the Cayman S to the MCS. In all honesty, the MCS is just about as fun on the street as the Lotus at less than half the price.

I'm sure others may beg to differ, but...

Chows4us, all 996s, 997s, 986s and 987s and Cayman's (except GT3s and Turbos I believe) have 'integrated dry sump'. Again, to get a real dry sump you need a GT3 or a pre-996 911. Integrated dry sump is Porsche marketing term.

OK, well it said dry sump it the further definition didnt sound like a normal oil system to me. Maybe semantics but I will buy-into the GT3 and Turbo having a different system.

Since 05 Elises have dropped like a rock in price, listings now into the low 30s, I would get you could get an 05 Elise cheaper than a JCW MCS and have much more fun.

An Elise maybe as a second car; not as a daily driver (unless I lived in Kali, or similar climate). The MINI's a good all-rounder.

Funny you should say that because on the Elise boards there are many people who say they only own an Elise and drive it everyday. Dont think so ... couldn't haul any groceries home!

I've lusted over Elise's since they first came out. Luckily I haven't had the ability to drive, or even sit in, one. I think the MINI offers a lot of that fun. Has anyone else seen the video of the inside of MCS passing all the Porsches on a club track day? I think it was a member in CT at Limerock but not sure. Whenever I think of Porsche's and M3's I always think MCS is just as fun, brand new, and half the price.

Porsche Engineer.......well that would be nice No I am not that, I am a researcher (chemistry and environment). As I said before I didn't mean to offend you in any way, but you were making assumptions a bit early about my Porsche knowledge (boxer engine vs boxster...). It's not as easy to chat about tecnical stuff in foreign language, because there always seems to be some term that you are not familiar with

If you will have a chance someday go and visit the Porsche factory and museum in Zuffenhausen. I am sure that you will love that experience

Cheers

First thing when I got back to my MINI was.......wow amazing, this car feels just as special as a Porsche does! I was really happy about that Although Cayman S is obviously a lot faster car, MINI still feels agile enough and is maybe a bit easier to drive. I have to say that ride quality in Cayman S with 18'' wheels and in sport mode (PASM and sport chrono package, -10mm) is still very comfortable which was a nice surprise. If you take a MCS with 18'' wheels....well you know what I am talking about

So is Cayman S in comparison to MCS worth it's money? Yes......But on the other hand MINI feels just as special and sporty in it's own way

Motor on

The day I decided to buy a Mini, I looked at 2 cars: Cayman and Mini. If the Cayman had more leg room, the decision might have turned out the other way.

BTW, the difference between seeing a picture of a Cayman and seeing a Cayman in person is huge. That car is unbelievably hot in person.

No offense at all. If you read a few posts back, I read your post quickly and just though you left out the "t" ... a TYPO. That's ALL ... we're good

Interesting you mention about the factory. In 1985 we bought a new 911 Carrera. I tried our hardest to get European Delivery but it just cost too much ... Porsche is about the ONLY European car maker where you have to pay MORE to get delivery at the factory!!! What's with that.

Maybe someday, when I'm old and gray, we will buy another new Porsche and make it there ... someday ...
