MPG's

I traded My 05 GTO for my Mini. I was getting 16 MPG on the GTO. Now on my Mini im getting 22MPG overall. I thought it was going to be a lot better. This is driving normal, shifting at @ 3k. On the freeway it gets about 32 MPG at 70 wich is nice. Im just not very impressed with the overall MPG. What do you guys get for MPG's?
Thanks Eduardo

Driving style ... hard acceleration and heavy braking will reduce MPGs.

I get 24-25 in the middle of winter, when the car takes half the journey to work to warm up, and 27-28 in warmer weather - both of those for mainly town driving and with the extra losses of the auto transmission.
On a run, I can match your 32mpg if I stay at 65-70 (going 75+ knocks the mpg dramatically).

Official figures are 25 and 32 mpg for a manual tranny MCS.....so you're probably getting close to the adverized values.

The MCS is tuned for performance not fuel economy.

Also, you mileage will improve past the 5K mile mark. Right now in strict city driving with the A/C at full blast I am getting 23-24MPG. This is for a '05 MCS 6MT with 11.3K miles.

22 mpg? You must be a lead foot! It doesn't matter where you shift - if you're in 3rd at 3500 cruising down a hill, the MPG will be very high, it all depends on how much strain is on the motor too (i.e. how far you're pushing the gas pedal).

I drive mostly city and some highway and my average is 29.5, shifting at 3k like you.

i just had a 15% pulley added to my 05 MCS.
amazingly, mpg hasn't changed even though i'm much more likely
to hit the gas hard on onramps, green lights, etc.

still gets 26 mpg (mostly non-highway)

My last reading was 27.6, which includes about 70% city driving. With 6,000 miles on the odometer, I suppose I'm well into the break-in period. Additionally, after years of driving an auto, I may have finally mastered the clutch again. In any event, I think my mileage is okay. Twenty-two MPG, however, seems a bit low to me. Perhaps you are dragging a mini-trailer, driving with the brake on, or just enjoying more than most of us the thrill of driving a vehicle that is meant to be driven.

I've been averaging right around 24/25 MPG doing regular around town driving including some "spirited" acceleration/brakeing/cornering pretty regularly since the end of December. I got close to 35 highway last weekend, it was pretty much awesome to see that kind of mileage. I'm considering trying to drive "nice" and see what happens if I shift @ 3K and accellerate/brake like a cavalier - but I'm not sure I'll be able to control myself that well .

I did the "dull and boring drive" experiment last year, and got over 33mpg on GBMINI#3 (MCSa) - I could have done better still if I'd cruised at 55-60, but it's just not worth having that little fun!

I've an old 2002 MCS with recent CAI and 15% SP, SD Coil-pack, plugs, wires, and I've seen the average MPG climb up about 2-3 MPG without much change in driving style. I mean, you can only go FOT onto the X-way for so long before letting off back to 70 MPH. My current city MPG is about 26-27 and a trip down the freeway I can keep it nearly at 36 MPG if I work at it. Nice thing about the Alta CAI is that you can associate the high-pitched whistle of the throttle with pushing too much on the accellerator (highway speeds). I assume everyone is running the high octane for fuel?

The milage gets better with time, I couldn't get over 28 highway for two months, my last tank (before cleaning a very dirty air filter) I pulled in a 28 tank with lots of city and 25% highway. I expect to see over 32 mpg in my next tank. I got abolut what the GTO did, when I was at the race tack a few weeks ago running WOT. I have an 05 MCS, just on the verge of passing 26k since August. There are some MC owners that can pull in 40+mpg already, just give some time and it'll get better. Also a CAI, Pulley and exhaust help make the car more effficent and improve MPG. Adding just a CAI for me added 10 MPG, so it actually just paid for itself about a week ago with the rise in gas prices, so now all that extra $$$ can stay in my pocket Hope things work out soon for you.

Yes, some mods should basically improve performance and fuel consumption. A clean air filter would help a lot.

Now to prove to the wife that new stripes front and rear can actually make the MINI cut through the wind better. Any idea on the payback period for those?

I've gotten 37 mpg in our '02 MCS on an all-highway trip in the 70-80 mph range. The daily commute is around 32-33 mpg. If I don't see much highway, it'll drop to the upper 20's.

Just remember that the MCS starts getting quite rich above 4k rpm. In normal driving, I'll shift anywhere from 2500 to 4k rpm. Stay light on the throttle and be smooth. Also, be aware of what is going on ahread of you. I've seen people take off and then have to stop at the light down the road. I just take it easy and possibly hit the light as it turns green...things you learn from driving a Honda Insight for 6 years ; )

motor on, a CAI added 10mpg?!?!?! I'd expect more like 1-2 mpg. Still an improvement, just not huge.

12 for the first tank and it averages 8-10 with my mixed driving. Less noticeable differance if I'm on the highway I get about 4mpg improvement on long trips, but easily pull in 8-10 over what I used to when putting through traffic. Also did a VGS about the same time, wouldn't suprise me if that helps some too.

Thank you ALTA. Did the CAI and Hose for max. efficeny seems to be working for me.

Have an MCSC. I average 24MPG (driving 1/2 hwy & 1/2 city) but I drive like I wanna not for gas conservation . I rarely go out of town but the few times I have I got around 29MPG was driving a (good) bit over 70

I'll second that...I just turned 7K miles and for my last tank (pre 7k) I was at 28.6MPG, this tank, my first over 7K, I'm at 30.1 so far.

I drive mostly highway, about 50 miles round trip to work 5 days/week. I drive pretty easy on the way in, but on the way home with the weather nice and warm now, it's windows down, sunroof open and heavy on the pedal!

I have an '04 MCS with 53K miles. I average about 31 - 33 MPG doing mostly city type driving (average speed is normally about 35 to 38 MPH). Like most that have posted here, I normally try to shift close 3K RPM and make extensive use of 6th Gear as long as I'm over 50MPH (approx 3K RPM).

I've been very pleased with the mileage of the car! It really helps, especially after paying $3.11/gallon of gas to fill him up this morning. :(

I have tried really hard to get over 25MPG's in town and I can do it but for a bit. I have an 01 Cummins Turbo. I can get that beast at 19 MPG's in town and 26MPG on the freeway. Its a stick and some mods to help. My Mini has 24k with just intake and exhaust. Maybe I'm just tripping but I think it should be better. Im sure its fine Im just wishfull thinking maybe. Still a lot better then My GTO.
Thanks for the replys
Eduardo

I am getting 28mpg 50/50 highway / city and my mini is slightly modded. It does drop a bit if I do a lot of spirited driving.

I'm averaging 37.15 MPG over 13871miles w/ my MC 5sp I drive average to spirited 50/50 city/hwy

MC = fuel economy
MCS = acceleration/top speed
BOTH = handling/fun to drive

Take your pick

Just did 1200 miles, all interstate, going mostly 75MPH, and it seems I got 42.1 MPG. In an 03 Cooper, with mudflaps and a 3rd brakelight mask

I'm a at ~4500 miles in my '06 MC and only get 24-25 in the city and 31 highway. I shift even lower than 3K, don't drive fast, don't brake hard, and still my mileage is pathetic for a Cooper. I'm can't imagine how some people report upper thirtys for their averages.
