Ok...now we can talk as adults. First, as the originator of this thread, let me be the first to apologize for my ill manner behavior in regards to some of the mean spirited thing I've said towards you and the unecessary posting of your cell number. I wish I could undo my childish behavior.
That said, I congradulate you on having the courage to face the music here at our forum. Now that you have written something to explain your orientation, I can see the silliness of the whole situation. Your attempt at humour at our expense was what set me on a rant. I think I can speak for everyone here that we, as a group, have a good sense of humour and can take a joke when it is perceived as such. As you might have deduced by now, only a small minority got your joke. Those who did, still perceived your portrayal as base on little or no insight regarding your subject. A "roast" can be a lot of fun but only if you respect the target and let the "roasted" in on the joke.
If you're sincere in broadening your horizon, you might want to reach out to us locally and come see us for who we really are up close and what we really get out of this little strange car. Your audience might find it more substative for you to actually explain what this Mini phenomena is all about rather than poking fun at the obvious. Yes, it's still silly in the end but you'll at least be able to say that you know "who actually buys these things"...You might even get a "hell ride" from one our members to demonstrate to you why we drive these "clown cars"...the same reason you would've preferred to have been covering a Lamborghini event...performance...
The door is open...
Peace

The site I made it for, Jalopnik, was quite happy with the way it turned out and the post I wrote for it. It is an excellent auto site and is unique in that we try to report on not only cars but on the "cult of cars".
Many may find the use of the term disdainful, but I feel differently. In many ways I would think it to be appropriate I use the term "cult" to describe the fantastically fanatic loyalty held by MINI owners to their vehicles. It's a great "cult", a cool "cult." There are many of these "cult" followings surrounding cars, with one following Mustang owners, Charger owners and Corvette owners as well. I enjoy the opportunity to see any of these "cults" up close, and I enjoyed the fact I was given the opportunity to see yours up close in front of Comerica Park this weekend. Its a testament to your familial ties developed with each other due to the vehicles you drive and, you know, that is a beautiful thing.
However, what has not been beautiful has been the way in which y'all have dealt with an interloper stepping into your ring, and especially an interloper who had no malicious intent whatsoever. It would be my suggestion for the next time this fan base finds itself in a similar situation, to take a step back and a deep breath. Although oftentimes it may be difficult to see the humor that may be there (although we can all agree the humor in my "announcing" was slightly dubious), and then laugh off comments you find either incorrect or inappropriate. What I wouldn't ever want to have happen is for situations like this to occur, where a community has potentially extended oft-held beliefs about MINI owners. That doesn't do me good, it doesn't do my website any good, and it doesn't do you any good. So I urge you, next time, take a step back, and take a look down the street. Who knows, maybe you'll see a caravan of Jeep Libertys (my car of choice) heading back from an off-road drive...I'd hope you, just as I, would laugh at the silliness of it as well.
Best Wishes,
Ray Wert

I would absolutely love to learn more about the MINI and MINI culture. Give me an opportunity to get through the next couple of weeks, and I'd love to get a chance to take pics at a MINI meet or a MINI drag race or what have you...I know not what type of events you or your MINI-ons participate in.

Sid, Bravo ...
Let's keep it civil here folks. I know that this thread was started in anger, however now that the target of all of this angst has come to NAM and apologized in a gesture of good will, the attacks against him here on NAM need to stop.
I have already deleted one post attacking the correspondent after he apologized, future posts like that one may also result in deletions and possible bannings...
Get past it people.... This situation was blown out of proportion to begin with, everybody needs to let it cool off and go away already...

Ray you drive a Jeep Liberty my wife drives a 2002 liberty that we bought new. from the moment we saw it we loved it. Same with the MINI when we had them parked side by side we realized why we love them both so much. Unique look, wheels far to the out side, the light that look like big eyes looking at you. the surprising amount of room in them. just take a good look at your Liberty by a MINI and you'll realize that you own a SUV that look like it was made by MINI. hate to tell you this but you own a MINI SUV

Might not fit your schedule but you are still welcome to stop by our next meet if your schedule permits at our Detroit Tuned Mod Party in Clinton Twp this coming Saturday starting at 9am (http://www.detroittuned.com/contact/). Many of our "hard core elders" (read insane) will be in attendance to welcome more Mini's who will undergo "enhancements" or "endowments" or "boobjob"...whatever... by Mr. Mini Mechanic himself, Chad
This is all in preparation for our annual national Minis On The Dragon event to commence on May 5 through the 8th in Deals Gap Tenn. If you think 101 Mini was crazy, how about 500?...check this out...

Lol!!!
I wish I could've gotten in on this earlier! Granted I've seen better film on teeth, but this was funny. The best part was when he tried to use his fingers and pick up one of the Minis (note the "classic" spelling) and place it in the parking lot! He may not be a comic genius, and sure the wind blowing in the microphone had smarter things to say, but it got some giggles out of me.
...kinda like when my father comments on my MINI. Not everyone gets "MINI", like I'll never get "Jeep", but that's what makes the world go round... and makes our cars pop out in a sea of SUVs.
Cheers!

Better camera + tripod - annoying commentary = nice video
Fantastic Ray and even though you did not have to do so, I applaud your effort to appease those that were upset that frequent NAM.
I agree with a few others ( an perhaps others who did not bother to post) that I suspected it was a joke.
I hope to see you out at an event or two and you can see what us MINI owners do in our off hours!

I didn't see any such thing...there was a black Mini with JCW wing and a few M7 parts brought out by the dealer but it wasn't even lowered

Thanks for posting Ray. Maybe you can ride along on our Spring Fling/Dragon Practice. Bring your Dramamine!
I think we should bring Ray down to MOTD and have him do a documentary on it. (I bet he'd convert into a MINI lover after it was over)
Ray, thanks for stepping up and walking into the lion's den to say what you did. I have a lot of respect for you for doing that.

If you close your eyes and listen to this guy, in parts of his comentary it was almost a recreation of Orson Wells reporting on the "WAR OF THE WORLDS" except they're MINIs invading Detroit!
He says, "There black MINIs, red MINIs, yellow MINIs....they're coming from everywhere now. Where are these coming from?!" Plus he was so stupid he didn't realize that thw Lexus was really a MINI in disguise, kinda like a wolf in the sheep's suit. "OK, that's a Lexus, I don't know what that is doing there."
LOL!!!!
This guy probably has an axe to grind in that the MINI was the feature car, that is, 101 MINI Coopers, representing 101 Anniversary of the SAE, in the MIDDLE of American car MOTOR CITY! HA! I love it.
Someone PLEASE take away this guy's camera, computer and the web site that would post such a bad video with bad commentary. This was news?

Man, I checked this thread this morning and decided it was way to aggro. I come back tonight and see I missed all kinds of fun. Like someone wiser than I posted on another thread, either you get it or you don't. MINIs will never be a true mass market car. Fine with me. (But BMW keeps toning down the colors to try to win over the beige-walled masses.) And at the end of the day, who really cares if Ray comes to a MINI event or not? We all will welcome him if he wants to come -- but if not is anyone really going to lose any sleep?
PS - Jalopnik is actually a pretty cool site for general info ahead of the usual car mags.
