My dealer told me that the 1st oil change is at 10k, and then only every 15k after that. Sounds crazy to me, that means I only need one like once a year?!?!

Remember the warranty is 3 years OR mileage. They can not refuse you service because of the readout indicator. If it’s been a year then you have the right to have your MINI serviced.
I asked them at what milage I should bring it to them and they said 15k, which seemed to much for me because I only put about 5-6k miles on a year. I think I will bring it in. Thanks for the info.

Yep, they are right. It might be less then that if you drive it like you stole it. The service indicator adjusts itself based on how you drive. However, if you do drive less then 10-15K per year, you still need to change it annually.

Cars have come a long way in the last 10 years. It still bugs my dad every now and then that he doesn't have to grease the ball joints or wheel bearings!

The indicator on the car for service/oil is pretty much just based on gas usage from how I understand it - not all that scientific or truly gauging oil quality, particulates and viscosity. For optimal engine conditions I think its better to be safe then sorry - I can say that when we have changed the oil at around 5k it is really dirty, it might be functioning fine but why not simply change the oil and take care of the engine better then the bare minimum?
